Feel free to skip ahead. The last 3 minutes of part 2 are about the most interesting.

The engine started getting overheated because the fan didn't come on. I think that's why the manifold warmed up. Just heat rising from the engine. It wouldn't do that when moving.

Even though #4 is running cold for some reason, the head was nearly the same temp as #2 so I consider the test of insulation between the head and intake horn valid. Just a tiny bit of rubber dropped the intake 20-25 degrees. I think it's worth adding something thicker and more permanent. I also know how much heat a spacer has to withstand. I'm surprised it's only about 250, I expected 350.

I wonder how big of an effect airflow has on the manifold temperature. Once the stock carb is out and a single carb is in, there is a LOT of space above the motor that will allow air to flow over the top of, and around, the motor than the stock carb.

hmmm that post was made in not to good typing moment
Joe, are you still in CT? If you pass back through this area, I have an IR thermometer and we could test it here. Also, Chuck is not far from Brian.

Gee, I don't think I ever paid any attention to that before...

Continuing :0fftopic: ... If I get some advance notice from Joe when he is heading south, I am planning on taking a day or two off from work. I have a spare room for him so he wouldn't need to do the trip straight through and a small get together would be great!

Maybe i`m wrong but doesn't a higher temp mean a better atomization of fuel?..that is to say the separation of fuel molecules requires higher temps before combustion for best burn in the cylinder.

Cooler provides for a denser charge.

I checked my runners, they have no insulating material between the head and flange other than a paper gasket. Running a few minutes they get hot to the touch.
Running down the road they stay much cooler. I attribute that to wind blowing over them as well as a higher volume of fuel/air mix moving thru them from the carb.

Both are right. Too cold and fuel doesn't mix very well and any water in it can freeze. Too hot reduces the amount you can get into the cylinder and can cause knock. In an ideal world you'd heat it first to get it well mixed then cool it as much as possible. There's an ideal compromise somewhere between them. I don't know what that is but it's higher than 32F and lower than whatever will cause knock.

That's why some engines with turbochargers have an intercooler. The turbo compresses the mix but also raises it temp a lot making it less dense, reducing the amount of fuel that can get into the cylinder. It can cost a lot of the gain the turbo gives you. Going through the intercooler gets out most of the heat to try to get it as dense as possible.
