I would likely consider the '82 gears. I think the gears ratios are a nice compromise between the '81 and '83. Combined with a C5 might be just the ticket!
I never liked the gearing on my 82. I can't remember but it was something like 6-7k rpms @ 60-70mph.

An 82 should be a lot less than that Randy closer to 5k at 70mph. The 82 was 500 rpm less than the Rats Nest at 70mph. In my opinion the best 1100 due to the brakes and gearing.

That's what I was thinking too.
I ran a 81 engine with a smaller diameter 83 rear tire and it screamed at 70 but was still nowhere near 6-7k rpm's.

When I had the '81 engine in this '82 frame I used the '82 final and ran about 5000 RPM at 70 MPH. Swapped in this '83 engine and now it runs a little over 4000 at 70 MPH. My guess is the '82 is right in between.

Is it even feasible to swap out the '83 and '82 gears if I decide to split the cases next Winter? I am assuming everything lines up?

Might need to start a new thread on the topic.

1st real trip in today! 175 miles roundtrip from my house out to Brian's and back. Load in the trailer was about 75 lbs total. It towed like a champ! :clapping: :music:

As far as the MPG, I found the most unique advice ever! In my Owner's manual, it says to check the air pressure level in your tires. WOW, what a concept! That low MPG reading I was getting.....might have been related to the fact both tires were more than 15 lbs low on air pressure???? :cheeky: :Awe:

Pumped up the tires on the bike to the correct pressure and , Lo and Behold, it rolls real easy now! :smilie_happy:

This tank of gas.....175 miles and 4.24 gallons of gas to refill to the same level i started with. That works out to 41 + miles per gallon in my book! (I'll take it!) :yahoo:

I am super happy with the trailer and highly recommend this if you are in the market!!

Excellent news Gerry :good:
what speed did you settle on?
I did the gambit! 75 MPH on the highways and what ever the limits was on the State roads (averaged 50-55 MPH on the farm roads). Those twisties on route 897 from route 322 on the way to Brian's were a real treat! (I would not have attempted them in the dark!)

Yep, the bike was leaning pretty good onto the hitch plate on some of those turns, but it handled that trailer like a piece of cake!

Going to stick with the 83 gears then?
41mpg I would tow the trailer everywhere with those gears :good:
Sounds like a roaring success Gerry and should do exactly what you promised for recovery trip to Florida  :moped: :good:

Hard to believe how low tire pressure burdened the bike so much more than the loaded trailer. Keep filling the change jar for the C5. I'm sure Brian has told you it's worth it..

Still saving for a C5 in the future, but yes I am leaving the gearing alone. I spent a lot of time at the lower MPH in 4th gear and realized that even at 50 MPH, I was only running 3500 RPM in 4th. If I popped into 5th at 50 MPH the RPM gets below 2600 and is too close to lugging.

I just have to get out of my head that I have to get to 5th gear all the time. I guess that '83 overdrive really is an overdrive gear!

Pistol and Moose did a great job! Engine was smooth as silk and at 41 MPG, I'm not complaining.

Roger that! When I was overhauling my '83, I was reluctant to spend the $$$ to have Pete redo the carbs.....best money I spent on the whole project! They do wonders, hands down... :music:

Just goes to prove how well the old carbs can perform when they are brought up to near new specs :good: :clapping: :salute:

UPDATE!

Towed the trailer from NJ to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and back with cargo loads from 150 to 200 lbs max. That sure is one cool trailer! Towed like a champ! Never bobbed, never wagged and stayed right behind the bike straight as an arrow! The cargo capacity is more than enough to handle a trip like this and some!

Gas mileage dropped from 41 to 38 MPG with the load and then dropped to 34 MPG when I reached areas where the outside temps ran in the upper 90's with really high humidity. All in all, it is a great CHEAP investment!! :clapping:
