I think the stock coils were 3ohm so that may work. While I really like points and run them on several bikes. You really can't do better than install an entirely new ignition. The C5 is worth the money and is a big boost on the old girls.

Yea, I've read that buy a lot of the guys on here. I've been hoping to get thru this year before doing anything else to the bike... but it seems as it's just one thing after another and I'm starting to feel as if it's a money pit.

Thanks for the heads up.

I know the money pit feeling but that is better a boat description. Once you get past all the electrical gremlins and lack of PO maintenance these bikes run very reliably for a long time. You're welcome btw.

I am in the exact same position as you right now, 1/2 coil is shot on my 77. The way I figure we have about three options

1- Keep the points, swap the coils with Dyna 3 ohm Coils with this resistor- https://sohc4shop.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=44 total cost around $150

2- replace the points with a Dyna S ignition, then replace the coils with some surplus GL1500 coils. From what I have read you can't use the 1500 coils with the points system, it needs to be electronic ignition. Hence why you would have to replace the points with the Dyna S ignition. total cost about $150

3- Full on ignition upgrade- C5 or Dyna S, both ignition and coils. total cost $250 for Dyna or $550 for C5.

I know everyone argues for the C5 upgrade, but I just can't swing that kind of money. I am thinking I may go the route of #2, with the 1500 coils and the Dyna ignition.

Just remember that the C5 is the latest high output coils, new leads and multi advance curve optical trigger ignition

I haven't heard that 1500 coils had to be electronic. Might be worth bouncing off Hondaman to see what he thinks if you want to go that route. One would think the newer Dyna versions were built to be longer lasting than the early models.

All high output coils need a transistorised trigger to handle the higher current required. Points don't stand up in these conditions.

Trying to circle the OP back in...

I have original OEM coils with points and condensers. If I were to replace the coils with the Dyna DC1-1 "green" coil do I need to do anything else to my orginal setup for them to work correctly. I've read that Randakk's blog said that this could be done and that you keep your old ballasts.

Am I missing something? As long as they're 3 ohm coils they should work ?

hmmmmm .....that might be true...but i think you loose all advantage of the dyna coils over stock ....i think hondaman makes a resisitor pack that kind of balances the two things out ...more power and points wear ...witch is probably worth it to do ..im going by just info not something i know at all ..never tried green coils and stock set up before ....

The ballast resistor Hondaman sells is made specifically for this task coupling newer more powerful coils (Dyna Dc1-1) with the old points systems-

I have been researching the heck out of the subject recently and I haven't run across anyone who upgraded the coils to a Dyna but kept the original ballast. Not saying it can't be done, just saying all I have seen seems to point to using the Hondaman ballast, and heck its only another $20 for peace of mind knowing it was made to handle the coils right.

I get that... but I'm still trying to figure this out... the GL1000 "original-oem" coils are at 3ohms... and the Dyna DC1-1 are 3 ohms... so why would you want to add a resistor such as what's on the link to make it 4 ohms? I'm sorry to be so dense... but I'm not too up on my electrical theory.... But adding another ohm of resistance to the already 3 ohms is still going to mess up the system?

More resistance isn't likely to screw up the system and may add life to the points as they will be less prone to arcing. The newer 3 ohm coils should have higher output voltage than the old stock coils ever had so a slight reduction in input shouldn't reduce output spark enough to even equal the spark of a healthy set of old coils.

Now I am starting to see why people tend to just recommend going with a whole ignition system like the Dyna S or C5 instead of pieces parts. Just saves a lot of headache trying to figure out all the details.

everything is so far behind c5 capabilities ...it makes the money over dyna a joke ...dyna coils dont compare to c5 coils at all ... the dyna ignition is not really as good as points when it comes to spot on timing....and it has no heat dissipating at all and why they fail so much ....the c5 ignition is spot on accurate never leaves the coils on even if rider forget to turn key off ...the multi spark part and programable advance curves set it apart by light years....all this with just one moving part ..no springs no rotor movment no erro of anykind ....so to me its a bargain not one part that takes a back seat to anything out there

I have installed a C5 and I must admit im less than impressed. I had better performance from my stock set up than I do with my c5. As far as a performance upgrade I just don't see it...
