Will the original exhaust system from a '78/79 GL fit or work on a '76?
I may have a chance to get a entire system from headers on back
off of a '78 or 79 parts bike. Would be nice if it would fit my '76.

I don't know for certain they will but I think they will. I've not read any reports of a 1000 exhaust not fitting another model 1000.

Might require mods. 75-77 were rather straight back from header. 78-79 were tilted up along the frame more. That doesn't mean it won't work. Look on eBay and you can see the difference.

I went to look at the parts bike today. The exhaust system is in amazingly good condition
from what I could see. We are going to bring it home tomorrow. No title, so I don't know
yet whether it's a 78 or 79.
But it appears to have the entire stock system intact including the
headers.
I really hope it fits my 76. What I have on there now is too darned loud.
A friend and I are splitting the cost of the bike, $200. There are parts on
there that both of us could use. For my $100 share, the exhaust system
would be a bargain.

Just a follow up that might help others....
The exhaust system off of the 78 parts bike turned out to be in excellent condition.
After a good cleaning, it bolted up perfectly to my '76!
The only glitch is that the center stand on the 76 does not contact the rubber bumper on
the 78 exhaust mounting plate. I just wrapped a piece of rubber hose around the arm on the center stand.
Problem solved.
Now it sounds like a Goldwing should, QUIET!
Makes it much more pleasant to ride for hours at a time.
(Hey! My headache is gone! How about that!) :smilie_happy:
