The LTD GL1000 that I am working on was covered in Vetter, while that's great for some folks I'm looking for the original naked look. The bike is equipped with S&W rear air shocks. The chrome is great and they hold air fine but they don't fit the look I am after.

I have looked at Progressive and IKON 7610-1296 both are awesome but if I can save a buck maybe I can actually get this thing running and ride it this summer. I've been looking at these, anyone have any first hand experience?

Seems I recall an all chrome version that looked even better, think they cross reference the same shock with the CB750 or maybe the 900 too, would be nice to have a selection to choose from..the all chrome ones were only 80 bucks and looked identical, I doubt Emgo makes them anyhow, just a repackaging of imported parts.
On the other hand personally I like the classic look of the SW you have, I would just ride them till you find ones you really like rather then substitute, who knows..maybe they ride better then you think, you wont get your 100 back on new ones so kinda wasted money to me.
I would look into the eye/clevis type shock for a match on height, any eye clevis with the right height made for a 750 and up should work on your 1000, maybe someone else will confirm.

Emgo's are not up to the quality what you have in my opinion, :nea: most, if not all their stuff seen is not what i would recommend.

Most times you get exactly what you pay for. You can't tell the quality of a shock based on its appearance. It boils down to the materials used and the manufacturing process. Yes, progressives are a little pricier, but there is good reason for that. They make a quality product. My advice, stick with what you have until you can afford what you want.

Don't have any experience with the Emgo stuff, but Dennis Kirk is a whole different story.....I personally wouldn't use anything from them if they GAVE it to me....
That being said....I totally unnerstand wanting to save some cash while trying to put your ride back on the road the way you want it. Perhaps the EMGO stuff would be fine, perhaps not.....but it might work well long enough to source some factory shocks down the road for a price you could swing. Ya never know...

Thanks for the input guys, guess I probably knew that but needed someone else to confirm it. I'll wait and get the Progressives'. Nothing stopping me from riding it with the Air Shocks.

A wise choice IMHO.... :eek:k:

I was able to get progressive style shocks from a vendor on Ebay that I am very happy with at about 1/2 the price of Progessive shocks. I do not know if he has them for GL1000's. They could be the Emgo's. but it does not say Emgo anywhere on the ones I have.

I am guilty of buying too many of cheapo emgo/forsa/whatever taiwanese shocks.
For my applications (CB750, XS750, rider weight 140 lbs, solo), they were all too stiff.
Not just the springs but dampers too. They have same amount of rebound damping unlike vintage stock dampers which had compression damping only.

However I saw satisfied users on XS750/850 forums who didn't like tired, soft stock shocks.

I haven't used them long enough so no idea how long they last.

I know I'm kinda late replying on this thread for the OP - but maybe others might benefit. I've had and modified a bunch of motorcycles. I've been a very happy customer with Progressive in the past. But, on a recent budget rebuild, I purchased a pair of the Emgo/Forsa units for my GL1000. As one fellow noted above, they run a little on the harsh side, but in this application, that is exactly what I wanted. They seem to me to be a very suitable alternative and with a very attractive price. Finish is first rate.

YMMV.

Yup. Mine are 310mm (12.2") and are plenty low. I've rubbed the mufflers a few times...

Nice blown Valk. Mine is NA and gets along pretty well as is!
Your wing looks awesome ! Is that picture in your profile have Black spring to the left ?

Thanks!

Yeah, sorry, those shocks in the profile pic have been replaced with the Emgo units we're discussing. They are much better than those cr*p black ones I originally installed - and shown in the profile avatar. Sorry for the confusion.

I love the way these 1000's look with a cafe' feel to them. My dad and I take ours to shows all the time. I get one common question that comes up at least once everytime... "Cool bike, what the hell is it"?

They always have a hard time believing its a goldwing...

I get the same thing with the 1200 Standard.
