My tach cable broke so I replaced the cable and outer casing.

Now my tach is screaming when I start the bike and while riding. It goes away and then comes back. I have reworked the cable thru the bike in different ways thinking the cable was rubbing or curved too much.
The od light is not coming on in top gear either.

Is my tach giving up the ghost?
If so does any one have an 83 tach laying around?

Thanks for any input.

Mine was screaming but after lubing the bushing with ATF it's been quiet a few years.
But that does require removing the tach and dripping oil down to the bushing. With tach face down. Best way in my book.

How much atf should I try to get in there?
I have a syringe that will shoot fluids pretty good.

I will give it a shot as I really do not want to find another tach.
Will that make the od light come back on?

All the bushing needs is a few drops. No idea if that will get the light working. Maybe the circuit is fine and the bulb is simply burnt out?

Did you ever get this sorted out? I know its an old post, but it looks like you still check in here occasionally?

My 1100 is doing the same thing since I got it out of storage this spring. Tach is very loud in the 3-4 k range.

And my OD light is also not working, but could be the bulb.

I'm going to go ahead and disconnect the cable for my commute home. If the noise is gone, I'll see about lubing the bushing.

No never did. It only screams about every 7 - 10 miles. Kinda gets me awake when I'm day dreaming on the bike.

When I changed out the 80 fuse box to a 1500 fuse box, I hooked the od light to the wire for the 3rd gear instead of the high gear. Haven't fixed that yet.

Mine was screaming on and off. Disconnected the tach cable before my commute home. Everything was nice and quiet. I'll see if I can squirt some lube in there so I don't have to take the whole thing apart.

Funny thing - my speedo was making the same screamy noise at low speeds last year - only did it for a couple of days. I guess the mechanisms in both clocks in pretty similar.

Just following up on this. Ended up squirting some WD-40 in the cable hole. Put the cable back in, and everything is nice and quiet. Tach is working smoothly again.

I'm not sure what the procedure is for putting the cable back in the tach, but I was having trouble getting it to go in the hole. I'm pretty sure the square hole wasn't turned correctly to line up with the end of the cable. My solution was to start the bike so the cable was spinning at idle speed. Worked like a charm, and it slid right in.
