Ended my trip on a HOT note...

20160808_202329.jpg

Over heated and I thought I was alright. I left it sit for a few hours to cool off but then there was a lots of tapping and pinging. It shutoff and now all it does it turn over. Pretty sure there is no compression.

oh no ...this is a joke right .....hmmmmmm i remember you telling me it ran hotter than you like ....hope it not fatal ,,, and its probably not ..id say the cylinders are still good ..and the adjusters have all collasped.....

certainly a hooching candidate now.....i say the heads are toast if not cracked with air channel deal they have.... sheesh that bike was a perfect 1200 standard...

Nope... not a joke. I was already think that if the heads are shot, the heads on the 81 1200 will be moving over and the 81 1100 heads will go on the 81 1200 motor.

I hope you were pretty close to home.

Sorry for your trouble, head or head gaskets problems seem to be the weakest link of these oldwings. I've never heard of so many head and head gasket issues on other bikes but probably mostly an age deterioration issue.

Anywho, sucky way to kill the joy of the journey.

Does Houston Texas count as close to home? :head bang:

Now I am working on several different options trying to get this thing back North.

Photoshop out the tow truck and you have a pretty cool picture.

I was thinking the same thing.

Brian did you overheat? or the bike? Hope you're doing ok!

Both overheated. I should have stopped at the exit before... Story of my life.

oh my .....this really just sucks ....wish i could help....are you at yours sons place ?

No, right now I am suffering at the Crown Plaza in Houston because I am at a training course at the Houston VA Medical Center. This gives me a few days to get things figured out, and the gubernment is footing the bill.

its almost worth popping the heads or head off and view the cylinders ....im hoping they look ok ..if so it possible replacement heads and gaskets might get you going again .....one thing for sure ..a head comes off easy ...and there not a reason to not take it off ....it certainly is not running as is ....you might fine that the head gaskets are blown also....if it was real hot ..the goo gaskets soften ...ive seem gaskets where the metal mesh was the only thing left in places ....sheesh i really dont know much about the 1200 heads other than i dont like them and dont use them ...

sheesh if i was still in indiana i could ship known good 1200 heads to you ..i had many pairs of them

anyway good luck brian on figuring things out ....

ive always pushed the fact ive always thought oldwings run to hot ...and head gaskets blow

The only thing stopping me from doing it tonight is the fact that there was the puff of blue smoke coming from the engine when I was shifting. Makes me think I may have a bad valve sleeve or worse. I really don't want to make a mess in a parking lot when I don't have a place to get rid of all of the anti-freeze and oil.

hmmm i dont know as said i havnt work them...1200 heads ...but i do know what they sound like when all the oil is out of the lash adjusters ...horrible racket of metal slamiing hammers ..it takes talent to get that done ...and them fire it up .... :swoon: :smilie_happy: ....
