I found another problem with the Stator connection. A few years ago I soldered the 3 yellow wires under the right hand side -at the stator. bike ran ok and eventually the battery died. Bought the bike used, and had to park it for about 16 months due to an illness so I figured it was OK and bought one.
The starter didn't care, still ran (not fast just started the bike). I had added a voltage gauge and saw about 14 volts but only when the rpm was up above idle. At lights I saw the voltage drop with blinkers and brake light.
While working on the bile I needed to unplug the regulator and found a yellow wire not connected. You can see it in the attached pictures. I cut out the melted plastic and bad connector and spliced / soldered the wire. Now at idle (with the headlight fuse removed) full charging!!
