Hi Guys,

It's me, Paul -- the guy from Redondo Beach with the trashed engine in an otherwise perfect GL1200 Aspencade.

I'm looking high and low for replacement '84 1200 motor, but the ones I've found are either super high mileage, have low compression, or SEI or LTD fuel injected engines, which I can't use.

Yes, I AM scouring eBay and Craigslist, as well as emailing every Honda shop in Southern California.

Please, if ANYONE has a lead on a viable 1200 engine, please let me know!

In the meantime, a (possibly stupid) idea hit me: There are lots of the smaller GL1100 engines out there -- could I possibly use one in my big 84 Aspencade? The displacement isn't THAT much different. And the engine itself should bold right in.

Here are some considerations:

-- The clutch on the older bikes is cable-acuated, but can be converted to hydraulic.

-- The cylinder heads are different (adjustable valves versus adjustment-free). Could I put my GL1200 heads on an 1100 motor?

-- The carb mounting points are the same -- would I be able to run my 1200 carbs on the 1100 without a lot of fiddling?

-- Could I put my newer 1200 alternator into the older 1100 engine?

Anything else I should take into account?

Am I crazy? ? Or just giving up on the search for a 1200 motor too soon?

Thanks,

Paul

Does Steve still have that beautiful 1200 engine?

~O~
I am buying engine from Steve.

An 1100 engine will fit into the 1200 with little trouble but I'd hold out for a good 1200 engine.
A bit more power and smoother as well less headache and it's kept original.

The carb rack will not easily interchange between the 1100 and 1200 - there is about 12mm width difference between them, the 1200 being wider. The 1100 intake ports are also larger.

Thanks Steve, I didn't know about that width difference.

Hey, if dan decides not to buy your 1200 engine, I'm just 20 miles down the 405…hint hint!

No one has done it I know of but I think the 1200 carbs can be fitted if the outlets are shortened just a bit on both sides and you use the 1200 air horns. The 1200 heads should fit as the 1100 heads do fit on the 1200. You should use the oil feed inserts from the 1200 if you install the 1200 heads. !200 alternator will fit but I wouldn't bother if the 1100 works.

Hey guys, I just bought a super low mile 84 GL1200 engine (15K miles) and it's less than an hour away from me. No more wondering if other model engines will fit!

As usual, thanks for all your advice and support. I will report back after the transplant.

Paul
