Seems about half my rides end in the rain.
As long as they don't end in tears.... :smilie_happy:

Hey Gerry how tall is that windshield of yours from the headlight lip to the top?
23" from the top of the headlight to the top of the screen (including the 1 1/4" space between the headlight and the bottom of the windshield).

Great! I just bought one that's 18" top to bottom so I should be able to get it adjusted for me. :thanks:

Just got back from an '80 mile Christmas Day ride!

This Plexifaring III offers great protection! It was about 44 degrees on average and I was able to use my standard riding gloves rather than winter gloves since the windshield has great hand protection! (Much better than I expected and certainly much more hand protection than my Vetter faring offered.)

The lower parts of the windshield also did a pretty good job at deflecting cold air from my legs, although not nearly as well as the when the lowers are installed on my Vetter.

All in all, I am very happy with the protection and could easily have ridden on a nice long road trip in these temps! :yahoo: :moped:

If you all do not know, 3 weeks ago Craig was riding in his newer Streamliner when he hit a deer. He when down and took a hard shot to his face. He was wearing a open face helmet. He is suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury and is having memory issues. Still in ICU in Gilmore Calif. His wife Carol has been with him till she passes out and they make her go home. I will not be religious here, but IF you are, ask for help and guidance.

Always reading about buffeting and wondering if there is an absolute way to be sure it is knocked down and I always heard about "lowering" your windshield until the top is below your eyes to get into the "smooth air". I have also read how adding lowers can reduce the amount of air coming up from under the windshield as a result of the high and low pressure differences at the front. I am fairly happy with my Plexifaring III, but always wondered if I was missing something, especially the whole "lower it until your eyes are above the windshield".

I am not about to cut down my windshield for the sake of testing, but a scratched Plexistar 2 came up real cheap on Ebay recently and I thought, hey, why not! I could make adjustment or changes and not be concerned about damaging my primary windshield. Plus, this one uses exactly the same hardware for installation so it is just a thumb screw away from changing!

Here is my current Plexifaring III:

And here is the Plexistar 2 installed:

The Plexistar 2 is shorter by 2", does not have the extensions, is smoked (which is kinda cool), and has a wider opening at the front without the rubber moulding. :read:

First thing I did was set it up exactly the same as my current shield. Out on the highway, air is blasting up from underneath without those extension. It is creating a real low pressure area behind the shield and I can really feel the air blowing nearly straight up behind the shield from my knees up. :heat:

Next, lower the top until it was 2" below my eyes. Back onto the highway. Holy mackeral! If that is supposed to be smooth air I am in trouble! It was blasting my helmet big time!

Next, follow the fork angle and drop it down to the headlight. Smoother, but still a lot of turbulence.

Lastly, raise it up, follow the fork angle with a little more angle towards me, but raise it 1 1/2" above the headlight. In this position, I am now looking through the shield. It is about the best I could get, but still getting hit in the head with buffeting even though I have made adjustments and checked the air flow with my hand during riding to find that sweet spot.

Face it, the reality is, if I can get a sweet spot with the air at the top of the shield, the air coming under the shield cancels the effect and keeps the helmet buffeting. The lowering until the eyes are above the shield would wear me out on a long trip real fast.

Looks like I'm keeping my Plexifaring III on for now! I am not done experimenting yet, but that is it for today. :moped:

Over the years I've enjoyed following your progress Gerry.
You've built a nice looking Oldwing.
+1 :salute:

Ah yes........a new to me device that has finally resolved all of the helmet buffeting! :yahoo:

After selling the '81, I now have some "loose change" to play with so I finally bought an MRA windshield extender. The one I bought is the smaller version (sport 10" wide x 4" tall). I did not want to try the touring version (15"wide x 6" tall) because it would have been too much on my Plexifaring III in my opinion.

Installed with the clamp on unit and took her out for a test on the highway at 75 MPH. Some minor adjustments but once I hit that sweet spot, BOOM, no buffeting!

I was even using my 1/2 helmet which normally beats the daylights out of my head at 75 MPH. I normally use my 3/4 helmet on the highway, but this device really makes a huge difference! I'll get a pic of it on the bike as soon as I can in daylight. I am real pleased!

There is always the other option Gerry... wear no helmet and you won't have anything to buffet. :smilie_happy:

Actually, my dad always complained about the same thing on his Helix, but on that thing, the issue was the windscreen was about three inches too short. I had a windscreen from that 84 donor bike that I gave him and he permanently attached 4 inches to the top of his windscreen. Looks are secondary to function as far as he is concerned.
