I'm the owner of a black 1978 Honda GL1000 K3. It's my fourth Goldwing. (I had a 1976 GL 1000, a 1981 GL 1100 and a 1985 GL 1200 in the past).
My present Goldwing is a one owner, low milage bike (32K miles) but, alas, it has been stored in a quite damp shed for 30 years...

Aside the GL I have 3 V4 Honda from the 80's (I forgot to quote a VF1000R project bike in my stable), a duo of 1984 900 Kawasaki and a GS500 Maico...
I'm an aeronautical enginer specialized in turbines.

The GL on her arrival at home:

Welcome to the fun. With all those bikes I'm sure you already know the only traits these motors share with turbines is they are internal combustion and are assembled with bolts and screws.

Thanks for your welcome!

The GL will be undergoing a complete restoration. When I tried to take the spark plugs out of the engine, they were seized solid in the heads. I had to use a 30" drive bar to get two of them out of the engine, a third one broke just under the collar of the plug and, as far as now the last one didn't move! I'll have to drive it out with my Chicago Pneumatic air impact wrench :head bang:

 Don't you hate that?! Good luck!

Thanks everybody! The plugs have been soaking in penetrating oil for a week... I fear that all the nuts and bolts on the bike will give me the same headache during stripping...

I wouldn't strip it down too far. Get the heads and carbs right. Check the cylinder sleeves aren't rusted. Then get it running.

Thanks Slabghost, I think I'll follow your advice and get her running. Then, I'll decide if she's in need or not of a complete engine rebuilding. Nevertheless, I'm worried about the primary chain. How long do they last on the GL?

Oh, by the way, I forgot to say that the last plugs went out without the pneumatic wrench but I had to use a lot of strength to get them out! May be, threatening the plugs with the Chicago Pneumatic made them reasonable... :smilie_happy:

On the 1000's they are known to make a bit of noise but I've never heard of any to fail.
