Greetings from the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, near St. Louis. I've been a proud owner of a '76 GL1000 for 6 years now. This bike was parked in a shed for 20 years and was basically destined to be parted out. Since I got the bike cheap enough and had good compression, I accepted the challenge of resurrecting her. It took about 6 months but was well worth the hard work. My greatest challenge has been carbs. I purchased a rebuild kit only to find out half way through that my I have '81 GL11000 carbs. Someone in the past made this change. I managed to get them rebuilt but still battle to this day with them and I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a single carb conversion.

Here is how she looks today

Off the top of my head, here are some things that's been done over the past few years:
Refurbished the radiator and fuel tank
New fuel pump
New points ignition (will eventually upgrade)
Complete brake overhaul with new hoses, rebuilt master cylinders, rebuilt calipers
New tires
Corbin Gunfighter solo seat found on local Craigslist
Harley mufflers (Stock horseshoe was bent in an accident)
Misc. wiring updates
New Starter

Near future plans are the carb conversion, fresh paint, and electronic ignition. This bike has been a blast to ride. I took it upon myself to renew the carbs because I just wasn't satisfied. Well, somehow I made matters worse so it's time for a carb change. I'll be studying the Single Carb Conversion threads closely.

Welcome to the forum.

There's lots to read in that forum. When you're ready, feel free to ask questions and we'll help as much as we can.

Many have had great success with the stock carbs here so you might want to post the problems you're having. Might be able to right them.

Welcome to the forum, Nice looking GL and a good save, the stock 75-79 carbs might be an easier rebuild, I pulled my 80 carbs off 3X till I got it right. once done right they have given me no trouble..finicky carbs though.

Yes indeed. What he said! And welcome to the fun. Any idea which year 1100 carbs you have? 80-81 carbs have pressed in jets.

Welcome; lots of information here on what tricks, & parts work best, to keep them running great.

Welcome from Southern California! Nice bike, and great job resurrecting her! Have you replaced the timing belts? I didn't see that listed in your post, and if they've been there for 20+ years, change 'em! ASAP!!

The 1000 carbs are definitely easier to rebuild than the 1100's are. If you don't go single carb, find a decent set of 100's

Yes, these are '81 carbs. I ran the carb numbers when I discovered I had extra parts in my carb rebuild kit. The jets are pressed in. I had to carefully heat the towers and use a drywall screw to bite into the jet and pull them out. They were caked solid. Once cleared, the bike ran fantastic. I guess several years of not treating my gas for winter storage wreaked havoc on them again. I'm sure it's something simple. I sometimes feel I spend more time wrenching than riding...

Look East and see me waving Welcome from Centralia!

We'll have to trade phone numbers or email addresses. I work for FS and periodically travel through Centralia. Maybe we can meet up sometime.

The simple thing you are missing is automagic transmission fluid. About 1 oz per gallon of gas. Helps stabilize the fuel and clean the carbs and adds a little mileage and power. Only downside isn't really. If you get a little much into the fuel it will smoke at start up but clears up once the motor has warmed. No harm to the plugs. You can use the recommended amount of Seafoam or Techron at the same time but I prefer to use those once in a while and the ATF regularly.

Geez, that's the one thing I can't believe I forgot to mention. As much as it's preached, yes, that's the first thing I did.

Take a look at the Carlyle meet'n'greet banner and plan to come to the Boulder campground in June since you are so close. I'm planning a different ride each day to keep people from getting too bored.

I read that post. My father in law's memorial service is the 17th but maybe I can find a way to meet up with you guys sometime that weekend. I doubt my wing will be fixed by then. I'll pull the carbs tonight and start on them again. Keep your fingers crossed.

I'll definitely take the atf into consideration!
