I'm looking at a dual Weber setup - Genuine Webers: Carbs (IDF 40s), rebuild kits, jet kits, Randakk intakes, linkage, air cleaner. Items are very clean with little use. I see prices on these Weber 40s all over the map. What are used ones worth? I hate overspending out of ignorance.

Is 5 bills too much?

Hmmm if your going to use them on a oldwing ...there not worth much except in looks ...the whole set up is to big and is not much better than stock carbs...in my opinion ...not much gain for 500$

I can't deny I love the look, but Randakk sure tells a pretty good story on them - and it sounds like there's more to gain than just the look.

14% HP increase, 6% TQ:

The dyno doesn't lie.

I've played this game before, though. I'd probably start looking for some early cams to run the torque curve up the RPM band a bit...

Sheesh.

those setups always look like they introduce more problems than its worth. to my eye anyway.

sourcing suitable air filters
keeping the rain out of them
keeping your knees off them
getting in the way of the side shelters
introducing a lot of air intake noise

apart from that they would be ok i suppose......

ps
yes randakk does tell a good story

+1 :yahoo:

Who's to say the dyno numbers are that different from any scc. Or that the set up would measure the same on another dyno.To my knowledge no one has actually done before and after dyno of a scc. I spent a lot of time looking at carbs on ebay. Five bills isn't outrageous for real dual webers.

Air Filters included, rain is not generally a problem in Southern Arizona.
Rain Caps are pretty easy to source (or make).
I'm 5'10" and my Darkwing seat moves the arse back anyway.
Knees in the carbs appear to be an issue with folks over 6'.
I preliminarily tried the suggestion of running the shelters without hinges. Seems to work.
The intake noise is part of the appeal.

I would be on your side with "spending out of ignorance" because I do not have any experience with this setup. However, if it is something you really desire to have, I agree that $500 for duel Webbers plus the full setup may not be a bad deal. Whether they are a good idea and provide performance improvement, I cannot say a word because I just don't know.

However, I am making various investments in my '82 (such as adding the SEi fuse/relay panel) and other "improvements" I just want to do for myself. The cost may exceed the value in the eyes of others and I surely will not recoup my costs if I sell, but it sure is fun!

My bike only makes the statement about me and no one else, so, have at it in my opinion!

You know, V, you hit the nail on the head. I have lusted after a dual Weber setup on a GL since I first saw one. It definitely makes a statement. And the thing is, to convince myself, I can provide links to Randakk's dyno runs and testimonials from happy users (and there are a lot of them) and tout positive aesthetic aspects, but in the end, I simply think they're danged sexy and I want them.

Besides, this is not a travel bike made for comfort over the long haul. I have another machine for that. Heck, with the bars I have on it, after a couple of hundred miles, I'm done anyway. No, this is pretty much a complete setup that will need installation and finessing. Real Weber setups don't pop up used that often.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger.

By the way, the setup was offered with a running custom '76, pretty nice shape, neat custom paint, spare clean engine painted black, a Weber SC setup, this complete dual Weber setup, Dyna ignition and coils still in the box.

You got space in the westfalia for this ride [emoji106][emoji2]
Go for it. Enjoy the feeling and hopefully also the increased power. Who cares about money? Well, if you're married.... [emoji4]
It's hard to say no!

I was sorely tempted. But, I have neither the money nor the space. Currently between jobs and my '83 Westfalia has reclaimed its half of the garage.
Sorry. I was hoping by now you'd found another employer.

No. And what does an unemployed GL enthusiast do with his spare time? Looks for ways to spend money. Go figure.

So does this under employed enthusiast. Went from 60 hour weeks to 20 hour weeks at much lower rate. Still I'm much happier now. Best of luck to you. And soon.

Late breaking news: I have committed to buying this setup from the fellow this weekend. I squeezed him a bit and now have the dual Weber setup, Dyna module, green coils and wires all for $550. (Tried to get it all for 5, but he wasn't having it).

I like having a spare ignition module, but I sure don't need the coils. I'm already running a pair. I will be selling them.

(and thanks for the well wishes)
