So another 1800 project is coming my way. This time Scott found us a 2005 that supposedly just needs plastics, which we happen to have an abundance of. We talked the guy down to $1200 and he volunteered to deliver it to us (about a 2 hour one-way trip). The bike will be delivered next Saturday, I'll post more when I know more, and of course pictures along the way.

Not actually a "classic" and for the most part, not relevant to most of our discussions here. Dan himself just mentioned in another thread that even the 1500 is pushing it! Out of curiousity, I did a search of thread titles with 1800 in them. Fifteen hits. Of that fifteen, most had to do with adapting some 1800 component onto a classic. There were a flurry here recently regarding the new 1800. I personally am happy you're getting into one for cheap - but an 1800 build thread here seems a little out of place. The few 1800 owners gravitate to 1800-specific sites to get their forum fixes.

Maybe I'm just getting older and more crotchity, but that's just my take. Sorry if I'm out of line, but I had a few cognacs with friends earlier and am more apt to speak up just now.

I completely understand, the 1800 is the newest model out there, and this one is only 13 years old, just letting folks know what I'm up to.

I'm putting my 1800 on the market before end month, good time to get it out there. Not going to stand on principle, want to sell it. My friends have asked why and my answer as always is the same, a well maintained fuel injected bike is as dependable as the newer ones. Once the bike is mechanically sound, electrics and electronics are a wildcard that you address when and if needed. These older bikes, especially the fuel injected ones are addicting.

Cheers

No problem Rob. We enjoy reading about all projects
+1 Hopefully you will get to keep this one.

I don't mind reading about an 1800 project. But I tire easily reading on other sites about the first world problems people have about a GPS that isn't talking to them, or LCD screens, seat heaters. Things that have no relevance to me. Don't get me wrong, I would ride an 1800.

Sheesh 1800s have been around now long enough that Honda won’t claim them anymore ...I’m totally ok with them ...I once had a 1800 swing arm that was going to fit a 1000 ....lost it to the she devil ....that was going to make hooch even taller geared ...if I could afford one to mod around with I’d do it ....not to sure how much I could old school it to my liking ...but I sure would try ...my bike hooch was old school in about all ways possible I could ...and we are talking a 40 yr old bike ....

I enjoy reading about any rebuild, the 1800’s will be classics one day. I do agree with Ernest, that as long as I can keep up the maintenance on my 1200’s I don’t need a newer bike. The carburetor ones are very addictive also. :builder: :yahoo: :moped:

That's it. No more cognac for me. Sorry guys - and sorry ROB!

For the record, even without the cognac, I still am of the opinion that this the Classic Goldwing forum and the 1800s just aren't there yet. The notion of a subforum isn't a half bad idea although it probably wouldn't be very active.

Collecting and storing relevant info in a 1800 subforum will just put this site ahead of the game when they do become classics and there will be more and more members buying them as time goes on. The air bag recall I posted about could have gone there instead of in the general forum. The backyard repairs being made by some now will come in handy to the future members when we are gone.

My two cents on including the 1800s here: This is a classic Goldwing site; the 1800s may not be classics yet, but they will be in another 7 years (25 years old?) Why wait?

Remember: This opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

i'm not against or pushing for it. it is just a question. when becomes a goldwing a oldwing? at a certain age? when production stops? what are the keys? the oldest 1800 is 18 now, right? the 2018 1800 and the 2017 1800 are not the same bikes, right?

Wow, I never thought an informational thread would cause such a ruckus! Don't get me wrong, I'm not upset at anyone, nor am I offended, I'm truelly amused! I have no intention of asking any questions, or discussing the nuances of running an 1800, my intent is to simply document our progress. I just enjoy bringing any bike back to the road, new or old. Now, you may continue on, lol.

:good: :salute:

I know of no other forums that document GL1800 rebuilds or restorations. The 1800 sites primarily report on rides, problems, and rag on each others opinions. There are some good tech sections, but no real ground-up threads. BTW, the GL1800 really had two series - 2001 through 2010, and 2012 through 2017. Tuperware and several other things were different, although the frame and engine were for the most part the same. And they are both no longer produced. The 2018 is a totally different machine. I'd love to see a build thread on this. The GL1800s are really unique beasts under the ABS.

So "Tilly" short for Matilda got delivered today...and Oh my, we have our work cut out for us. We think someone may have started to part her out because there are some crucial bits missing, the least of which is a seat! Here's a few pics for now, this will definitely be a ground up restore!

I actually thought of you as the bike was being dropped off, kind of a "what would Joe do" moment. It would actually be cool to build one of these stripped down!
