The last radical design motor to make it to production didn't last very long. The Wankel rotary engine. The designer claimed it could run on hot butter and proved it.
 
Same concept as the GM A6 A/C compressors from the '60-'70s. :mrgreen:

That was my first thought - a swash plate compressor. I'm curious as to how they seal it with rotating cylinders sharing spark plugs, and no valves...
 
The "no valves" is a common setup. 2 stroke opposed piston diesels have been using intake and exhaust ports with no valves for many years. The original steam engines also used no valves, only ports.

I could be wrong (and mostly am wrong) but I thought there was a type of radial airplane engine that also used no valves.
