How America launches a ship.........

When we launch, is there anyone aboard?
That is a side launch and NO we do not ride the ship during a side launch (unless you enjoy getting tossed overboard!) :hihihi:

Side launches can be violent affairs!

It is not uncommon in foreign countries to have a crew on the ship no matter what and you can see some of them climbing over the side of that ship. I'm sure many more ended up in the drink (and I really pray they did not hit the superstructure on the way down!)

The top launch was done with rolling air bags and was not a properly engineered launch! Here is what an air bag launch should have looked like:

The first one looks like a scrap yard, cant imagine treating a good ship that way, I really hate seeing ships get scrapped..especially war ships..I think they earned the right to live.

:smilie_happy: I wish it was being scrapped! It was a foreign Coast Guard Vessel, new construction! :hihihi:

Love the side launch :good: I think the Martinis would definitely be shaken not stirred :smilie_happy:

I would have never thought air bags would / could have been used to support as ship to for a launch.
Believe or not, the idea for air bag launching came directly from the days when they used to use bananas for launching (banana were placed on the launchways and the skids slid on them).

oh boy ... it seems obvious to me ..that launching boats sideways is just asking for something to happen ...it is absolutely the easiest way for boat to go over... i used to build interiors for a yacht builder and watch one go over ...so it happens here in america too ...the water couldnt have been calmer either ...glad i got my money already ... the guy that bought the boat was quite famous and was there too ..he wasnt happy ...LOL ... i just happen to be there collecting money ...what million dollar show it was ...then went to 0$ in one minute

You are right Joe! :hihihi:

That is why it is so important that from the design phase all the way through final construction, someone has to be tracking the weights and changes. It is so easy (especially in a yacht) to have the Owner say, "I want this or that added and I must have it!" and then ten more "must have its" are added to the vessel during construction by the shipyard (which often DOES NOT consult with the original design team Naval Architects!)

Don't pic on yacht owners alone, the US Military does it all the time and then they are shocked at how a ship originally priced at 300 million costs 1.2 billion, isn't as fast as it is specified for and sits 24" deeper in the water! :whip:  (BTW, those are your tax dollars at work!) - Joe, no comment required! :smilie_happy:
