Many think the motor is over rpm on the 81 but it seems quite happy at highway speed and is one very spry bike.

I agree! Even when our old '81 engine had the rod knock going on, it was still quite happy up at 5K RPM on the highway. It is neat to see the differences in the 1100 engines and how the bikes run. We originally had an '81 engine in the '82 and it sure was quick through the gears, but I would not have called that arrangement "peppy". :hihihi:

The final ratio in the '82 rear is different from the '81 plus the smaller wheels. Went and stuck the '83 engine in the '82 and it really lowered the RPM. Makes for a great touring bike, but a bit slower around town.

Now I finally get to ride an '81 all original and I can see why so many people like this year 1100! It is not only spry, it leans right into turns and pulls out like a rocket. I am not too happy with the Plexistar II windshield. It is much smaller than the Plexifaring III and there is a lot more wind noise.

The only remaining item on our list is to pull the fork springs and install the Progressive fork springs. The front seals are not holding air for more than a week. Withe the Progressives, that will not be an issue.

Seeing Pistol Pete is no longer offering a carby service maybe it is time for Gerry's Carby Service to come online?

I'll vote in favor of that!

Trust me, I am considering it! Pistol gave me a lot of help on this cleaning and lots of tips. He was spot on every time! I guess after rebuilding a specific type of carb for so long ya get really good at it! :hihihi:

Between Pete's advice and Roady's visual tutorial, it really was a lot easier!

Tonight I am performing the final sync. We are going to head to VA for a long weekend to see my oldest daughter and the grandkids so I would like to get the Progressive fork springs in before we leave.

Progressive fork springs installed. HUGE difference (in my opinion).

I had to buy a battery. I had swapped the AGM from the '82, but after all, it was 5 years and 10 months old. New AGM and this engine instantly started. Everything is now completed and I took the bike out for a 100 mile break in trip. It sure is sweet! Items I noticed:

* The progressive fork springs made a nice difference!
* The engine is really quiet and smooth (only 20k original miles).
* The OEM seat is pretty darn comfortable!
* The Plexistar II windshield does not work nearly as well as the Plexifaring III at reducing buffeting.

All in all, I am pretty pleased with this bike and I'm very confident that it will make a great bike for someone! Time to sell!

Last chapter of this thread. Bike has been sold and shipped! I hope the new owners have as much fun with her as we did!

BTW, if anyone on the East coast needs to move a bike up or down the coast, I have the number and information for the shipper. Great guy and very reasonable prices! It cost me more money to ship my '83 engine to me back in the day than it is costing the Buyer to ship this bike to Virginia.

My cousin is coming out the end of the month. He's gonna rent a bike and we're gonna ride the northwest hills. Your welcome to join us for a bit.
I appreciate the offer! I have an employment situation that is not quite resolved yet. I do have plans to head up to Kingston, NY at the mid-end of month. If I can work it out, I might try to come up that way first. No promises yet.

Time to start checking other electrical connections. Thought I would start with the dog bone fuse. Opened it up and "looky what we have here"!

Now that is a classic move if I ever saw one! No wonder the starter had a hard time when the engine was hot. Good thing I didn't decide to go for a ride! :hihihi:

Luckily, I still had a spare fuse from the old '82 wiring.

I'll let the next owner decide if they want to change the fuse and solenoid out.

Twice in the same year. Doolin05 over on GWDocs found a copper wire fuse mod as well. Thought I'd post so that you know you were not alone in having this very unique mod.

Cheers
