My question is, with a space of just 4" between those two braces on an '82 fender, how do you get the front wheel/tire in or out?

Isn't it obvious? They want you to let the air out of the tire! :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy:

There should be a plate on the frame down by the kickstand. It should tell you what tires are for the bike
Didn't see anything down by the kick stand but found tire sizes on the ID plate up at the steering neck.

Here is a description on serial #'s.

When I did my front tire myself (for the first time) that's what I had to do.

So the bike is back together and ready for spring. Here are some pix of the finished product.

....or so I thought... :fiddle: :music2: :music:

I spotted these in the local Kijiji for $25 so went and bought them. After seeing and hearing what Made2care did on the Wanderer II I had it in the back of my mind to try Sportster muffs.

Now to try and find some solid steel in the header I started to peal away the rusted layers. Using my trusty hacksaw ( with a new blade) I started cutting through the the weld where the OE muffler attached to the header. I sawed about 1/4" in from the start of the weld. I also cut through some of the layers of muffler so I could peal it away as I went around.
Here you can see some of the crap being pulled back.

With enough hacking and prying and cursing you get down to the header which is fairly thick solid steel. Should be plenty good enough to weld to.

This is all the rusty crap I stripped away

Then I bolted the header pipe onto the GL to see how the muffler would line up.
Stuck the front end of the muffler onto the header pipe. Not bad, I would say. Just need to weld a short piece of 1 3/4" OD pipe onto header for the muffler to clamp to and then make some kind of hanger for the muff.

No advantage other than quicker hearing loss. The Sportster cans sound just fine to me as they are - especially at idle. I gave up loud a long time ago. Too many equate loud with fast or cool. They usually figure out sooner or later that there's no correlation.

I agree.

I think it’s best to keep the stock system when no other mods are done to open up the flow.
