When I first got my '82 Standard about five years ago I wanted to bring it back to it's original colour which is Wineberry Red :lust: . So I bought some nice sides cover off EBay and looked but never found a decent shelter in Wineberry. I did buy a shelter that looked pretty good on EBay but not so good when I got it. :nea: So the side covers and shelter stayed on the shelf.

I read recently that there is a Duplicolor paint called Dark Garnet Red that is very close the Honda Wineberry. So I figured I could paint the shelter with this paint then I could use those nice side covers. When I went to Canadian Tire and looked at all the Duplicolor paints I thought Vintage Red Pearl looked closer so that is what I got. It was $14 for a rattle can of that colour, $7 for a can of black primer and $7 for a can of clear.
One can of colour was enough for the shelter and I went and got another can of clear. Here is how it looks.
In garage it looks like a good match between the shelter and the side covers.

Outside in sun you can see the difference between the shelter that I painted and the side covers.
Not a close enough match but I could paint the side covers with the same paint.

Comments? Thanks for your indulgence.

Looks great from here, my paint work has always had orange peel as well. :smilie_happy:

Could try the garnet. Or just a light fog of the new color on the outside edges of the side covers.

All the original wineberry oem paint I've seen look almost like they air brushed a slightly darker color along the edges and sides of the bag lids and trunk. Could be it's faded some that makes that look I don't know but it seems to me that variation would be very hard to match.

The Duplicolor clear smells like Laquer and dries very fast. So it is hard to get it wet enough for a good smooth gloss. The only way I've found is to put on several coats of clear and then sand the orange peel down with 1000 then 2000 grit sandpaper. Then polishing compound. Comes out like a mirror but takes a lot of time and work.

The colour on the can of Garnet Red looked way too dark.

As you noted lighting makes a big difference. Primer or base colors can also make a big difference. Garnet may give you the deeper red you need to match. I would probably just fog the edges of the side covers with the new color and call it good.

Yes Gerry, that is really the proper way to do it. :good: Are you going to spray it on yourself?

I guess you'll need to buy OE type pinstripe decals too? I wonder how hard those are to put on.

As usual I am looking for the cheapest way that still looks decent.

I have the complete decal set. (Was my Christmas present from the girls this year!) I have all new OEM badges and emblems EXCEPT the front fender badge. My primary debate is whether I want to attempt the painting and decal work, or have a shop do it. We are working on the '81 Standard we are restoring with the intent to sell so that I will have the money to pay a shop to do the paint job.

BTW, where did they buy the decals set from?

So, I have started to sand and polish the clear coat :builder: . I started at the top with the two lids and the top horizontal surface next to the lids. Using 2000 grit sandpaper and a water spray bottle I carefully sanded the orange peal down to a smooth surface. Then I polished with a fine polishing past. When you are done you should be able to see reflections clearly.

You have to be careful not to sand through the clear coat and into the red base. The "mud" that you get while sanding should be a cloudy white but if it is red then stop. I sand a bit then clean the surface off and check to see if the orange peal is gone and repeat until it is gone. This much took me about 2 hours.

The next area I polished is the back part. I took some pictures along the way. Bare in mind I had to some body work on this part to join the two halves of the shelter. It isn't perfect and sanding the clear coat will not fix that.

Before sanding

Wet sanding

After polishing with paste

This is the stuff I used for polishing. Originally bought for aluminum but works good on paint too.

I hope this helps anyone contemplating painting their GW.

Body work is an art, :good: sadly i was not, & am still not very good at it! :smilie_happy:

I got them from Diablo Cycle. They do not list them on their site anymore, but they still make them. My set was $137 delivered. Real nice folks!

I've seen that seam filled in a while back on a guys bike I met up in the mountains once. It looks real nice. Nice going Brian.
Thanks Dan. To join the two halves of the shelter I sanded down to fresh fibreglass inside and out. I mixed up a fair amount of JB weld and spread it on each side of the joins. Then I push pieces in of FG mat into the JB. Did this inside and out at both joins in two layers.

So I took Slabghost's advice and fogged some of the shelter colour onto the top of each side cover. In fact there was just enough paint left in the rattle can to put a couple of light coats onto the top edge of the side cover. :good: I had to shake it to keep it spraying. :beg:

Here is the shelter vs side cover before fogging :nea:

After fogging :good:

Thank you Slabghost and CGW :thanks:

Now I need to figure out a non-decal way of putting OE pinstripes on the sides of the shelter. :headscratch:
