On the new wing I'm getting, there are some chrome add-on pieces that are showing some wear. Has anyone had luck with the rattle can chrome paints available looking close to the original finishes? I have heard that a gloss black base then the chrome top layer is the best way to go, but I wasn't sure how good it looks. I

There's no such thing as chrome in a can. That said, it looks better than rust.

Can you spot the "chrome" paint here? (Hint: Fuel pump bracket left side, back half of pump itself).

I don't know why, but your picture didn't show up.

I would love to know if anything does work. Don't need any for the Gold Witch but it would be handy to know. Especially a high heat can.

I tried Gold Chrome paint on a set of valve covers out of curiosity. No chrome here..... :cheeky:

But they sure did shine up as polished aluminum! (Same cover)

Better then rust for sure, I have used duplicolor and other top brands as a last resort and it wasn't bad but not chrome, more like a very shiny silver, there is also chrome 3M chrome wrap if it is relatively flat with smooth bends, never used it but can be seen on you tube..

Then there is a spray chrome a shop can do like this video.

Less then chrome plating but hard to find those that do it...Finally there is a chrome that is used in the model world, no not those models but the ones you glue together. I havent looed into it but worth a look, comes in sheets and is called "bare metal foil".

There are lots of videos of the process. Read the comments too.

Doing some research and found a huy selling those expensive chrome kits on ebay but also sells a paint called killer chrome, pretty expensive but if the results look like the pics it would be worth it, not so much chrome but like a nickel plating if the pics are accurate.

Looked again and they recommend using their base coat which is necessary and clear as well but the clear may not be necessary, they have a kit as well but is 279.00.

I think I'll stick with the Duplicolor (or similar) stuff the topic title refers to. If all you really need to do is make a more obscure component workable, then that stuff will serve the purpose. But, for prominent items like fenders, valve covers, etc...save your pennies and buy parts with good chrome already on them. None of these snake oil processes is equivalent to the real thing.

There is no substitute for good chrome.

(unless it's polished aluminum)

(or black paint)

Your probably right, the parts I'm taking about are fairly prominent, engine covers that are right next to more chrome, battery cover extensions that are right next to chrome, did I mention there's a lot of chrome on this bike?

I can relate:

Awww man!!! Ya gotta warn us before putting that much chrome up on the screen! I gotta sunburn as soon as the post opened!! :smilie_happy:

That is a great looking bike!! I love the Valk!!

These two covers in particular have some flaking and pitting going on, but they are right next to other chrome bits, so I will probably need to save my pennies and buy new ones eventually, Not to mention a bunch of other chrome I want now...

I apologize to Rob - but the topic of chrome is near and dear to my heart. That's why I said earlier that there really is no replacement - unless it's powdercoating or black paint.

But, I hope you don't mind my throwing up more chrome porn. The shot of my Valkyrie earlier taken right after I installed the very rare Viking pipes shows the header collector exposed. The pipes did not come with the covers for that area. Not a disaster, but I was a bit bummed. The chances of finding Viking parts was pretty much zero.

...until I found out that the Viking didn't supply them. They were designed to use the factory Honda covers that were on the original pipes! I was coming off Cobras, didn't have the factory pipes, but figured they'd be easy to source. Not exactly. Most are starting to show their age and some were surprisingly rusted or scraped. I eventually found two - I had to buy them separately to get a nice pair.

Fit like a glove. More chrome.

No chrome paint on this baby:
