    nickbiddle's GL1000 Odyssey - Chapter Headgasket

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MU9JODqd8A I was up early on this dreary Saturday, so I pulled the wing out of the garage to see if I could get it to run for more than 30 seconds. It ran for 20 minutes and I actually took it around the block. 1-3 never stopped smoking. I'm going to block...

    1979 GL1000 Won't Turn Over

So I think the "bike dying" thing was correlation and not causation. I think the fuel line may have gotten slightly kinked when I was putting the carbs on and wasn't feeding the carbs properly. It fired back up today and did the same thing, thick white smokescreen. Smoke smelled a bit sweet...

    1979 GL1000 Won't Turn Over

The good news is that I'm neurotic enough to have already ordered the Genuine Honda gaskets. After I finish infodumping youtube videos and reading the relavant sections of the shop manual i'm going replace it. So how much of the top end of the entire can I leave intact while replacing the gasket?

    1979 GL1000 Won't Turn Over

Cross post update: broke the carbs down completely, cleaned and reassembled. Bike started straight away and ran for 20-30 seconds. exhaust pipe 1-3 had a huge plume of thick, white smoke pouring out of it the whole time. after 30 seconds it died and we're back to square one: bike won't start...

    1979 GL1000 - Carburetor Cleaning

Unfortunately I couldn't get it to run after the initial 20 seconds of life. The smoke was thick and white, started immediately when the bike fired up.

    1979 GL1000 - Carburetor Cleaning

Well, got everything back together and fired it up. The bike started right up! It was climbing to a "choke out" appropriate RPM nothing sounded weird. I was overjoyed until I looked behind myself to see a giant cloud of white smoke billowing out of the right hand tailpipe just before it stopped...

    1979 GL1000 - Carburetor Cleaning

UPDATE: Carb one is reassembled. Seemed somewhat easier going back together than it was coming apart, which of course gives me The Fear.

    1979 GL1000 - Carburetor Cleaning

I found the ultrasonic cleaner on amazon. I was going to go to Harbor Freight to grab the 40$ crap model they have there, but thought better of it after my HF compressor crapped the bed last week. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J49JK8G/ For $111 shipped I'm super happy.

    1979 GL1000 - Carburetor Cleaning

The ultrasonic cleaner did a great job on the carbs. The rebuilt kit is arriving today, so we'll see how it comes back together!

The work continues. Jets are soaking, carbs are separated and are waiting for the ultrasonic cleaner to arrive.

    1979 GL1000 - Carburetor Cleaning

What better what to kick the weekend off than wrestling the carburetors out of the GL1000? We all know how they come off, so I'll spare you the photo album of my gingerly wrestling them out of their home and into the basement. I flipped through the shop manual the previous owner provided and...

    1979 GL1000 Won't Turn Over

Ultrasonic cleaner is on the way, now begins the trial by carburetors. I'll start a new thread when I crawl into the carb cave next week. Thanks everyone!

So to follow up, is there a specific rebuild kit I should pick up? Is the Randakk kit worth the price?

    1979 GL1000 Won't Turn Over

Before I start the GRAND UPDATE, thanks for the nomenclature correction. I'm self taught and I work on and enjoy motorcycles as a mostly solitary activity. If it wasn't for forums and manuals I would have invented a secret language all my own to describe this shit. 9/21/2016 - Flippin carbs...

    1979 GL1000 Won't Turn Over

Old gas is out of the tank. The oil smells a bit like fuel, I have 4 litres of ravenol and a fresh filter en route from. Spark plugs are intact but a little rough. I'm going to test for spark tomorrow just to establish continuity on the wires and then replace them. Did a compression test (cold...
