That is the reverse lever switch, but please don't get discouraged.
According to the Honda parts fiche, the gear position switch (35759-MN5-003) is no longer available for 88 to 97 GL 1500s. Looks like reverse won't be a working option on the 1500 eventually unless some after market supplier...
I'm selling my bikes because my back won't let pickup a bike if I drop it. So far, the 78, 85, and 86 trike are gone. I still have an 84, an 86, and an 88 that need homes. The 84 has a leak at the back of the engine.
For what it is worth, someone just posted a 1975 GL1000 on local Facebook. Unfortunately, no title. Asking $300.

1978 Goldwing GL1000. 65,384 miles, Windjammer SS fairing, saddle bags and Vetter trunk. Ran when parked inside (2015), needs carburetor kits installed (on-hand). Very good candidate for restoration. Includes extra motor. Asking $1000.
Time to give up on 2 wheels.
"Longer"?? Lower ratios give you higher speed at lower RPMs and increase MPG; higher ratios give you quicker acceleration, but increase RPMs and lower gas mileage.
