Starter arrived very quickly.
Even came with a new gear. Don't know why, but ok, whatever.

Wasted half an hour trying to get it in, then removed the old gear for comparison.
Old gear will not fit on splined starter shaft.
Then I discover the new gear is wrong O.D.- tooth count.

I'll get back with an update to let you know how they handle it.

hmmm i was just about to pull the trigger ...pretty sure there were some good reports also

Things happen, and mistakes are easy to make. I may be partly to blame for taking the cheap road, for which I have my reasons. The important thing is how will customer service handle it. So far this is about things to watch out for. Stay tuned to hear about the talents of customer service and support.

what's the real world story with the starters? pretty sure gl1000 and 1100 use the same but dunno from there or even if compatible or bolt in for 1200

i did notice when glancing at 'em that some seemed to be physically diff (just by looking at the pix in the ad) for a given model

pretty sure the mounting ears at the back are not right for 1100

The Cross Reference program shows the starter is compatible with these models

Boy that gear is way off there Ron.
I'd say bad job counterfeiting.

:smilie_happy: thats why they call it the disaster market :smilie_happy:

Looking at the seller rating the guy has I am pretty sure you are going to find he makes it right for Ron he wouldnt be in long enough to get that big a number without being straight dealer

Well, I'm sure that gear fits "something". But not my bike. I expect the seller will make it right with a refund after the starter is returned. Unless I get lucky and he has something else up his sleeve. I called the number, but no answer. Might be too late over on the right coast today. I'll try again tomorrow, but probably won't get an answer till Monday. As for Chinese counterfeit, most likely anything I buy (new or worn out) in a comparable price range will come with the same odds. I don't have a rebuildable core, or the money to buy one and have it rebuilt. I hate to pull the starter off the running bike, not knowing what tomorrow will bring. I was wanting to get this bike running and try to get a months rent for it while it's still riding time. That might not happen for awhile, I guess. That's my only disappointment. I still have a couple cameras I can get rid of to buy some time before the landlord gets pissed.
The point of this was to warn others of the screw-up possibilities out there in the world and whether or not to use this vendor. (jury still out to lunch)

By the way, one gear has 12 teeth and the other has 13 teeth. And of course the shaft splines are different. Could this be for the wrong year? Somebody pulled the wrong part? Part boxed wrong? Boat load of "oops" parts?

you hit it right on the head ron. 12 for one and thirteen for the other. different years and size of motor. I found that out when I ordered my new starter for my 1100 the guy that ordered it asked that question so I took him the old starter and he confirmed it was 12. :good:
You say some 1100's have a 12 and some have a 13? My 82 Standard and my 83 Interstate starters are interchangeable, and I just pulled a 13 tooth gear out of the 83. I need a starter that fits the 13 tooth gear. Both my bikes were on the compatibility list in the ebay ad. There was no reason that I could see for me to think it wouldn't fit. I'm starting to think they mistakenly sent me the wrong part - for whatever reason. But it would be nice to know what I got just so I can argue intelligently. I'm not a GoldWing expert and it seems like everything I do to these is a new adventure.

fishing around, for now, looks like 13 teeth is right

looks like 84 is 12 teeth

85-7 is 11 teeth

this is just from a quick look on ebay, where info is often incorrect

84
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/84-85-86-GL1200A ... 2ebba12d8e

85-7
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/1985-1986-2-GL12 ... 2ebf2eb73c

i can't confirm this but i have read that if you have the wrong sprocket assy at the front of the starter motor, you can swap them, so use the new body and put on the correct sprocket front end unit that matches the engine in question

my guess is the splines differ, or perhaps changed among the 3 offerings at some point

didn't really go there but one 1 # did come up many times ..31 tooth spline, pretty sure it was for the originals and might even be for 1 of the 2 available units for the 1200 line

anyone know what the deal is with the 84 unit that is a one year only? one thing that might be correct is a 12 tooth sprocket vs 13 at the start and then 11

UPDATE:
Got somebody on the phone today. A rushed voice on the other end talked circles for a minute or two, then concluded that I must have ordered the wrong part when I couldn't produce any numbers from the old part. :head bang: The old part has been gone for a year, I think.
Emailed me a return shipping label to send it back for the promise of a refund. :whistling: Hopefully, I'll be able to try again next week.

What numbers?

In pretty short order it became obvious to me that I wasn't gonna be right and he wasn't gonna be wrong. I can't argue with somebody who's better rehearsed, when I'm standing here holding the correct part in my hand for the wrong vehicle. Seems as though he doesn't know what he's listing and I just hauled off and ordered what he listed.
At this point, I'll settle for my money back and move on. Let's see how that part goes. :ahem:
