My 1978 GL1000 came with this 9 pin headlight plug dangling. I can't find a place to plug it in.

Agreed that the plug is most likely from a Vetter fairing. A clue is the fact that the turn signals are removed from the forks. Inside of the headlight bucket, you will see a standard 3 wire headlight plug.

Thanks all. I removed the Vetter connector and cord from inside the headlight bucket. Now I have a working headlight. One little success at a time, until the day comes that I have a usable bike.
I'm working on the front turn signals now. I have the turn signals but not the studs that attach them to the forks. It looks like the studs need to be 14mm threaded on one end and 22mm signal mount on the other. I can find 12mm to 22mm on e-bay, but not 14mm to 22mm.

Correct. Look close at my profile pic and the front signals on my '75 GL1000. The OE reflectors are the hard thing to find, lol!

I believe that listing is incorrect. Those stays should fit 75 - 77 model year, but not 78. I do not have another to GL1000 to compare to, but believe 75 - 77's have M12 x 1.5 threads, where as a 78 has M14 x 1.5 threads. Partzilla shows a part # of 90129-431-670, only used on 78's.
I found a M14 x 1.5 oil drain plug fits fine. I'm searching now for a insert to to reduce the hole to M12 x 1.5 so I can use the more avalible stays.

The listing is correct. I checked a signal mount on one of my '75 GL1000 parts bikes on Sunday, before referring you to the above listing. The threaded hole in the '75 headlight stay is LARGER than 12mm, (which would be 14mm) & I even took a 12mm bolt with me to confirm this. Furthermore, the 12mm signal stud is too long for the shallow hole in the GL1000 signal mount, and there is no room for the extra length and a nut; it will bottom out against the triple tree clamp. This signal post is the same on all GL1000 models from 1975 to 1978. If you have a 14mm thread on your headlight stay, the signal studs from '75-up will work.
The 12mm posts with nuts are for mounting the rear signals onto the rear grab rail.
I get the impression you want something cheaper than the correct 14mm signal post that is currently available, and I can't blame you. I have bought entire parts bikes to get just one or 2 pieces I needed. I figure if I have to spend $500.00 for spare parts, I'd better get my money's worth! The disadvantage is I have to pay $200.00 a month for storage of my parts bikes and all my other spare Honda parts I have amassed over the years, lol!

You can also install the CB550 & CB750 front signals on the headlight stay at the headlight bucket itself. Then just put any Honda reflector over the original signal mount with double-sided tape. That would also save you the trouble of finding the GL1000 headlight-mounted reflectors, as well. You do have options.

Thanks for checking that on your bike. It gives me more search options knowing 75 -78 will work. Your right I am trying to fix up this bike on the cheap. I don't want to get into a situation where I have way more money into the bike than what its worth. Always going oem can get you there quickly.
I like your idea of moving the turn singals up to the headlight. I'll see how that works.

Basically it will have the same appearance as the CB550 or CB750 that uses those signals. Most people won't even notice, after all, you would still be installing factory Honda signals. A vintage Goldwing guy will notice, but to anyone else it will look just as factory as the low-mounted ones. The CB400F 75-77 did the same thing, mounting the front signals halfway down the fork tubes. But the 350F had the older spherical signals on the sides of the headlight, & most people don't even notice the difference, lol! The 400F also used the big flat signals like the CB550 & CB750, and again, most people didn't eve notice!

Hondas were very versatile with interchangeable parts between models, and they did it for obvious economical reasons of their own. You can mix & match your own variations and still have a 100% Honda bike, lol!

I would be willing to part with the ones in the pic (above), shoot me a PM and we can work out the details.
Now THIS is the ultimate sacrifice & act of human kindness any Honda owner could ever offer or hope for! 😭😭😭😭😭
