Does the fuel pump continuously pump when the key is on or does it shut off after time if the engine is not running?

Not positive but believe it shuts down with pressure, mine doesn't run with no motor cranking or running, just hear it for a very short time with key on.

ANY electric fuel pump should NOT run with the key OFF. If it does, check the fuel pump relay, it's prolly stuck, but may flip off after a minute or so. Assuming, of course, that there is no added on fuel pump switch somewhere that is "hot" all the time, and requires your input to turn it on/off.

My problem is,i did some electrical work recently and i had the key on,i noticed the other day my tank was empty and i have gas in the oil.im wondering if the pump runs with key on,engine not running

I would assume the pump runs anytime the key is ON....not sure on the 1200. The 1500 has a vacuum valve that keeps fuel from flowing to the carbs until the engine is running, but the pump runs with the key on. You can check the Honda Service Manual HERE to see how the 1200 is supposed to work. (y)

Check it for stuck or incorrect float levels. it should shut off if it can build pressure. If you have a sinking float or stuck float or incorrect float setting, you are going to be changing the oil a lot.
