38000 miles and well stored and maintained with custom airbrushed murals and hand laid pinstriping. I got it for $800 leaking antifreeze through the exhaust. While I was "in there" I replaced the head gaskets, water pump (Honda pump), timing belts and thermostat as well as all the associated seals and gaskets. Rebuilt the clutch slave cylinder and the rear brake caliper, put new ceramic carbon pads on and got a new front tire installed. The previous owner was riding on a 19 year old front tire with cracking in the sidewalls! No leaks when I was finished and on Thanksgiving day I got to ride it. It's stored for the winter now. Before I disassembled it I was intimidated by a large heavy bike. Previously I'd owned 350, 500 and 750cc sport bikes. I'm not real tall so I cut the seat foam down, put in a gel pad, resculpted the thigh areas and then air stapled the cover back on. Cant tell by looking at that its modified but my heels made it to the ground. After putting it back together I found I'd lost that feeling of intimidation, I don't fear it, I respect it. It's a different style of riding than I was familiar with and I'm glad I upgraded to this bike. It rides very smooth and handles very smoothly as well. I'm looking forward to some trips next year.

I replaced the battery with an AGM battery. The wiring connection at the starter solenoid was charred and failing. I bought a new solenoid and connector, matched up the wiring and plugged it in. Burned out my stator! The supplier-manufacturer had the new connector wired backwards. Spring project is to install a new stator and voltage regulator.

This is my experience getting a hold of a very nice '86 and fixing it up from normal aging. I hope this helps someone in making the decision to buy an older bike. Not all the parts are available new anymore. Dealers refuse them for service. This will be Your antique to care for.

I hope that you mean the stator of the starter motor. Otherwise, you will have the fun of pulling the engine to replace the alternator stator. There is a "three yellow wire" connector coming from the alternator to the rectifier/regulator that gets heat and corrosion damage. Before the leads melt together and short out, cut the connector off and replace it with one of the many alternatives mentioned on this and other forums. Personally, I like high-current RC helicopter connectors. BTW, this connector is 3phase AC,so no polarity to worry about.
