GL1200 Engine Rebuild - Part 5 - Post Getting To The Road

Thought about the '85 Limited Edition carcass that I bought. To get the engine home from Ontario, going to take it apart, easier to lift in and out of the car and place heavy parts in the middle of the car, lighter parts can go anywhere. Dan - had thought of the hydraulic adjuster going bad...

GL1200 Engine Rebuild - Part 5 - Post Getting To The Road

Not much happening on the 1200 at this point. Heading to Ontario tomorrow morning to see Mom, not doing well so I want to get back before she does take a turn for the worse - she's 89, 90 in March coming. Been a couple of years since I was back. Have been discussing the issue of no...

GL1200 Engine Rebuild - Part 5 - Post Getting To The Road

Finished the kitchen backsplash this morning. Had to silicone between the counter and backsplash. All done, my job in the kitchen is finished. Spent the rest of the day troubleshooting the 1200 engine issue(s). There is a water hose that goes in front of the right timing belt cover back to...

GL1200 Engine Rebuild - Part 5 - Post Getting To The Road

Bike is back together. Took it for a road test and gas. Not firing on all four cylinders - hmmmmm. Will look into this. Was before engine work so must be something just not right. Will be checking this week coming. Next time I have it out will bring it in and do a compression test.

Fixed a broken wire on the large connector for the travel computer. Installed the air filter. Fuel system pressure test. No leaks, first time ever that I have not had a leak after having the fuel system apart, very impressed with myself if I don't say so - yes my arm is sore from the pat on...

GL1200 Engine Rebuild - Part 5 - Post Getting To The Road

Been a productive couple of days. Slowly working from rear to front. Rear wheel is on as I mentioned, air chamber in and cables and air hoses connected. FI system in, fuel system connected. Vacuum hoses connected. Been using blue loctite on most of the smaller bolts. Noticed these were...

    what did you do today

Brazing is an art and a very good skill to have. Good on you for your new tools. My father used to use coat hangers to braze with, just had the knack.

    Hi Idle issues.

Good to read that you have balanced the right/left cylinder banks, and the engine is operating as it should. You'll really enjoy the bike now. As for carbs, no easy solution either way. The big difference is when you lay the bike up for a prolonged period of time, carbs can be an issue. My...

Have mentioned in jest that the '85 and '86 FI models were a Honda Civic on two wheels. Lots of FI parts are interchangeable. Curlytops is going to enjoy the SE-i

GL1200 Engine Rebuild - Part 5 - Post Getting To The Road

Got the engine in the frame this afternoon. Did a quick check of numbers 1 and 2 intake lifters. Going with what I have regarding the lifters. Did one change to numbers 1 and 2 intake lifters, will test first before any other changes. Put a coat of CERAKOTE on the FD. Not as good looking as...

    New Here

Welcome and I do like the older '85/'86 fuel injected models. D-50Dave is too kind. That is one good looking bike. Best advice is to get a copy of the OEM service manual, electrical troubleshooting manual and the supplement. Bike and Dennis on the Steve Saunders forum mentioned that he...

GL1200 Engine Rebuild - Part 5 - Post Getting To The Road

Thanks. There are always options, just how much time and effort does one want to use in order to keep an older motorcycle, or other vehicle on the road. There will come a time when I will probably say enough is enough, but not yet. Another good day. Family lunch gathering. Sonya's brother...

GL1200 Engine Rebuild - Part 5 - Post Getting To The Road

Good work day. Engine parts go on quicker than coming off, and it looks like I have accomplished something. Heads on, rear cover, water pp/transmission cover, thermostat housing and water piping, starter, IAC valve and water hoses, starter, engine timed - installed. Going to check the shim of...

    Hi Idle issues.

A quick check to determine if the cylinder bank balance is off is to use a small heat temp gun on the exhaust header. All cylinders should be close to the same temp. If one side is significantly cooler than the other, a good indication that a balance may be required.

GL1200 Engine Rebuild - Part 5 - Post Getting To The Road

These engines seem to be very well made. The crank and con rod bearings were the not easy to source, especially if these were not the middle of the road size. GC33 has information on bearing suppliers and where you can get piston rings, or piston and ring sets from Germany. I think I have...
