Another timing thread... running on two?

What do you do with the cardboard? That wasn't in the manual. Yes read as much as I could find about timing these, but I am miles away from fine tuning.

Another timing thread... running on two?

Following the manual, made a Parallel hookup with one clip on the points spring and the other on earth. Light come on when the points open.

Another timing thread... running on two?

Thanks both, Julimik54 - yes, the manual is how I did it. Refnaxs60 - I think my problem is more fundamental than fine tuning. I don't get the lamp to come on static timing the right hand points, which I reckon means I don't get a spark. That is what is confusing me, is there something...

Another timing thread... running on two?

Hi all, I bought a 1976 GL1000 over a year ago, that had been parked up since 1991. New belts, new battery, carb cleaned etc etc and I managed to get it started with lashings of 'EasyStart spray'. But it ran poorly (carbs or ignition seemed favourite) and life got busy and it ended up parked...

How do you remove the kick start arm from a '76 Wing

I had a look at mine. Looks like someone has been there with a set of vice grips and a lump hammer already. I didn't even attempt to loosen it. Will have a go at the weekend. In the meantime will try to get a new one.

How do you remove the kick start arm from a '76 Wing

I presume you turn this clockwise? Does that turn the engine the right way?

How do you remove the kick start arm from a '76 Wing

I don't have kickstart lever; what is the best way to crank the engine (assuming no starter motor) when working on things?

    New owner in Scotland

All the valve clearances were fine. But as the coolant and belts were like new, I guess the previous owner may have set them when switching belts. I am hoping it is just me being paranoid, should find out in a few days. I need to spend money on brakes, tyres, etc but will sit on that until I...

    New owner in Scotland

Quick update... New belts now fitted, but the ones that came off were like new. Valves all moving freely, but am worried about low compression - it was easy to turn the engine with the spark plugs in place. So I am suspicious that perhaps it had a belt break, with consequential damage, and the...

Good plan. What I was intending to do was take the rocker covers off when I do the belts, and do the tappets at the same time. This would also let me ease the pressure on the cam (by slackening the tappet right off) to stop the cam turning when the belt is off - I read somewhere that this is a...

I have belts on order now from oldwing.eu, should get them in a week or so (thanks Brexit!). But never in my wildest dreams did I expect the antifreeze to look like this when I dumped it this morning. Looks clean enough to bottle and sell as Austrian wine. Thank you Mr Previous Owner.

    New owner in Scotland

Thanks again. Started working on it today, and I think it is better than I'd hoped. I think it had been a sidecar outfit that was in the process of being converted back to a solo when it was parked up. The alloy wheels are new, or as new. The tyres are new, still with mold marks and "hairy...

    New owner in Scotland

Thanks all! Been reading up on the belts, and was intending to get the thing started before doing the belts. Just incase I find the engine is fubar. If it starts, then belts, waterpump and thermostat would get done together. Do you think hoping for a 20 second run on the old belts is risking...

    New owner in Scotland

Hi all, I have just bought a 1976 GL1000, that hasn't been used since 1991, so I anticipate needing a lot of advice before touring the hills and glens on it. Previous owner (on the log book) was, I kid you not, William Wallace.... FREEDOM!!! The engine turns, after soaking the bores with...
