It's one of those 'oh f#*k' moments - HELP PLEASE!

I really appreciate the ideas guys. ;)It looks like the part labelled (4) in the drawing above and slips nicely over the rear axle (20mm diameter?) If I had been rebuilding the rear wheel I would be tearing it all apart again by now, but the rear wheel was in such good shape I just replaced it...

It's one of those 'oh f#*k' moments - HELP PLEASE!

The only problem is that I didn't touch the rear wheel bearings (replaced the cush drive components though) and according to my drawing the spacer (no.4) goes between the bearings - so how can it possibly fall out and get lost? I'm confused

It's one of those 'oh f#*k' moments - HELP PLEASE!

You know the feeling - we've all been there ..... I just finished putting the bare bones of my GL1200 together - everything came back from the powder coaters and I was a frenzied wrencher and felt quite pleased that I had done a good day's work on my pride & joy. Until I saw this part which has...

    GL1200 Death Rattle?

Thats a great help jsp so thanks for that, however my stator design is quite different so the 'straw' technique won't work - you can see that my access holes line up to where the rollers are in the fully retracted position. However, it got me thinking and I found an even simpler solution. I...

    GL1200 Death Rattle?

Well, once again I have to thank you guys for the diagnosis - which was spot on of course! I took the back cover off and the stator came with it, bits of sprag clutch all over the place  The securing nut had worked loose so the stator was rattling like crazy. After a clean up, all of...

    GL1200 Death Rattle?

Yes, and apart from a chronic case of engine case corrosion it runs remarkably well for a 40 year old. Yesterday I gave the poor thing a really good degrease & wash - possibly the first in its life by the look of it! I will be restoring it over the next 6 months or so and it looks like the...

Thats encouraging news guys - thanks

    GL1200 Death Rattle?

Thanks for the replies guys (y) It took me a while but here is a video of the noise - as you can see, the poor old girl needs some serious luvin' I didn't think of the alternator coming loose - that is certainly now on my shortlist :D

    GL1200 Death Rattle?

I have just bought my next project, a 1984 GL1200 which REALLY needs some tlc. It runs quite well but has an atrocious engine rattle at tickover. I know that this can be worse if the carbs are out of balance but they have just been balanced to eliminate this as the cause. The rattle is clearly...

    Twin Weber 40s on a GL1200?

Yep, it's a pity they didn't work out. They certainly looked great though  Thanks for everyone's help - it was much appreciated (y)(y)

    Twin Weber 40s on a GL1200?

Finally she's finished and ready to sell - it took me 3 months to get this one properly sorted (one month was trying to get the Webers to work  ) but at least she's finished now.

GL1200 jet sizes on an '84?

Thanks Oldie - I have ordered some 108's and will use them

GL1200 jet sizes on an '84?

You see my problem? There is no clarification as to why the main jet size varies withing the same year  I will probably stick with the larger size - safer bearing in mind my unrestrictive (loud) exhaust and air filter which will make things on the lean side

GL1200 jet sizes on an '84?

Thats my problem - what is the stock size? I have seen many different 'stock' sizes and need to know what size I should use, based on my setup. 102 seems quite lean but I am not sure that deleting the Californian junk will make a difference.

GL1200 jet sizes on an '84?

Following my disastrous Weber conversion saga I have decided to go back to standard carbs. Taking it one stage further, I decided to delete the secondary air feed stuff which I believe was for the Californian bikes. Now, my question is what size should my main jets be? I have ordered a carb...

    Twin Weber 40s on a GL1200?

After struggling to find an easy solution, I had a re-think about this project and came to the conclusion that this will just be a money pit and it is better to cut my losses and put the original carbs back on. I could try porting the heads but that will take a lot of time and of course more...

    Twin Weber 40s on a GL1200?

Well she runs - sort of ..... I still have to sort out the carbs sync properly but at low revs she behaves quite well. Mid range is where the problem is - there seems to be a big black hole where all the power is supposed to be ...... if you open her up, ride it out and wait, full power kicks...

    Twin Weber 40s on a GL1200?

I can't believe I didn't figure that one out for myself  I guess I am getting too used to having fuel injected, super tech bikes these days - I forgot that the Wing is old school  A couple of feet of vacuum hose now fitted.

    Twin Weber 40s on a GL1200?

I have some more progress - the engine ticks over quite well and low road speeds are ok, however when the throttle is over half open things get a bit unstable - feels almost like fuel starvation so maybe the main jet needs changing (147 at the moment) It occurred to me that the ECU has a vacuum...

    Twin Weber 40s on a GL1200?

In my case it was just the fact that I had forgotten to connect the regulator sensing wire  🙃
