Finally took my 1200 on a spin around town.after running at 35-40 mph it started missing and spitting real bad.got it home and pulled the plugs and they were black and real sooty.so,which jet should i change first, pilot or main.your input is appreciated.

I don’t know that carb well but running around that slow you’re probably not getting out of the pilot jet, or only slightly so I’d start there.
Typically carbs will draw from both pilot and main most times but working with pilot and getting a good idle is where I’d start.

Thats what i figured dan, thanks for your opinion.we'll see how that goes.

For what it's worth on that motorcycle anything below 4000 RPM you are taking a combination of either strictly pilot or Pilot and high speed jets. At 35 to 45 mph in anything other then 1st or second gear, you most likely are on your pilot jet. Do you have a manual to set the carbs up with for initail run?
