81 change out rim18” to a 16”

I Have everything to change out the rear but was concerned about the high RPM. My question is could I keep the 18 inch tire rim and get an 18” Wider tire still using the 16” swing arm to accommodate 18” wider tire??? Any thoughts would be welcome!!! Badorderbob

Don't know about the wider tire, but I did have an '81 engine in an '82 frame with the smaller wheel and boy did that engine hang in the high RPM's on the highway. Later, I put an '83 engine into the '82 frame and that lowered the RPM significantly.
