I have two final drives for my 1000. One from a 77 and one from a 78. The PO of the 77 painted the final drive with a coat of crinkle paint: looks nice, but just not my taste. In addition, the 77 came without a rear wheel. Rather than sanding the 77 final drive smooth, I am thinking that the best solution is to take final drive and wheel from the 78 and move it all to the 77. Part numbers are the same for the two years, but I cannot find anything concerning gearing issues between the two years and I want to make sure.

Are there any gearing differences between the 77 and 78 final drive?

You might consider swapping the whole swing arm. I think the 78 had an extra hole behind the rear shock to aid in tire swap on the road. It would give you a chance to check and regrease the swing arm bearings at the same time. I think it's a straight swap. You can use either rear tire I think.
