I'll weigh in a bit. Age is not a factor here, both are long in the tooth. Cosmetically these bikes are similar. Not a fan of floorboards. More luggage room on the 1200 Aspencade. What is the mileage on the engines? These engines go for a very long time. Mechanical issues, brakes, timing belts, bearings, and such are readily available as are most o-rings. Electrical and electronics would most likely be aftermarket, or used.

Are you mechanically inclined and a DIY person? What do you want the bike for, around town, daily driver, touring? Are you intending to keep for a while?

I have an '85 Limited Edition fuel injected model that has been my retirement work project for the past 6 1/2 years. New paint all round, and rebuilt engine, no more smoking on start. It'll be around for a while. Use it for daily rides, around town and touring.

Do the maintenance on each, carbs are a concern especially if you lay the bike up over the winter, but if not should not be an issue.

Older vintage Gold Wings can be an expensive proposition, but can be kept to a minimum as long as you keep these original.

I like the 1200 engine, works well. The look of the '82 is rather captivating.

Go for the '82. Do a lot of initial maintenance with $500.00.

get the service manuals regaradless of which bike you choose.

Good luck.

I know for a fact the 82 has new water pump and timing belt's new air filter spark plugs carbs adjusted

Having owned an '82 and ridden an '85 Limited, I would go with the '87. The 1200 is smoother and more powerful. Downside to the floor boards is that your feet will roast in the summer!

With all things being more or less equal, condition, mileage etc.
Having owned two 81's, one dressed, & the other a standard.
Now have three 1200's, one 87 Interstate, & two 84 Standards
My choice would be the 1200, without hesitation.
Motor is quieter, smoother with no valve adjustment, a real plus.:)

As good as can be expected, for the time that it was produced.
Mine works fine, as expected, its a Honda:)

Memories of all the failed LED clusters in the 1980's & 1990's cars (US & Asian), makes me shy away from anything with them, although Honda bikes seem to be better than most others in this regard. For the money and the mileage, either one looks like a decent deal!

Great choice I M H O 😀
the 87 was the last year for the 1200 drivetrain.
The refinements have always made, in the last model year of anything.
The first year or two, often have issues to address.
Often making the final year , a much better choice
