real basic. i know where the drain plug is, where the oil filter is, thats not the problem....what i need to know is how much oil do i put into my 83' GL1100?

the side window is always hard for me to see through for some reason, on any bike, not sure if im not hitting the light right or what...but does anyone know how much oil i put into this? i need to do an oil change on it on wed.

thanks for your help

3.4 quarts. I'm not too fond of the sight glass myself. I want to put a dipstick kit on mine, once I get her back together. I had one on a '75, and it was great. Gotta check eBay for one, I guess. I love these 1100's, especially the '83.

so i pretty much just need to dump in 3 1/2 quarts? hum...being a bigger bike i thought it would take more then my 750 maxim.

well i change my oil every 2-3 thousand miles, so i dont think i need the dip stick, but knowing i need to put in 3 1/2 quarts is the main thing.

In the Gallery you now can access the repair manual pages as well as the owners manuals.
The owners manuals are great for the every day stuff.

well i agree there, i never liked doing an oil change on my bikes....one of two things ALWAYS happen:

1. I burn the hell out of myself with the oil when i take off the plug or filter cap, it just come shooting out like a waterfall and i cant get out of the way fast enough.

or

2. i drop a tool or the plug or something into the oil pan after its mostly full.

not sure why, but one of two of those always happens to me.

They do seem to be a bit "off" in accuracy.
I think the oil wicks up the stick some because when pulling out and wiping I'd get different readings each time. Never was quite sure what the level was.
I've since cut the tube and clamped on clear tubing which does read closer and easier to use by simply looking down at it while on the center stand.

it would have been nice if goldwings came with an electronic indicator like my maxim had.

I've since added a one way cap on the hose end Aapple sent me.

I have the hose marked with a black sharpie with full level on the center stand and another for full on the sidestand.

Edit: Thanks Gerry, I forgot about that thread.

Found a shot of the engine end:
