Is there anything i need to look for when shopping for a new master cylinder other then it fit a 7/8" bar? mine is that old plastic that is pretty badly sun damaged and is flaking off so i thought it would be nice to update the whole thing.

Just make sure its the correct size

I recommend pulling any you buy apart, clean, and assemble properly using brake fluid to lubricate. Although all the Chinabay masters I've bought worked out, they were all filthy, some assembled wrong, not lubed with brake fluid. One rear MC required mods to fit and to stop leakage, but a drill corrected both.

Hmmm look like the master I got ..it seems fine ..except the window on them will get ate up ..using clear silicone inside prevents that from happening..and the lever is smaller than stock ..the master one step up holds more fluid ..brake line hooks up like stock ..and the lever is like stock ...window still needs protected from brake fluid ..as said clear silicone work for me ...hard to beat the price going on there

trying to stay away from china stuff right now, and the only other ones that i can really find are chromed ones going for $100+ and I am not really wanting chromed pieces with the direction i am going. so looking at black ones. if you know of any others that would work, would appreciate some help with links.

Really? It may say it ships from Kentucky, but it is no doubt made in China with absolutely no QC here other than counting. Easier to get a replacement if it is DOA? Certainly faster. One of mine came from a USA vendor (out of Arizona, I think) same China part. Like I sad, pull it apart (easy), clean it, lube with brake fluid, and reassemble properly (one of mine had the rear piston cup in the wrong place). Takes less than a half hour. Oh, and one of the fronts I bought came with a spare sight glass, too.

Ok, doing some window shopping online, and i keep coming across different things that are confusing me. Been looking even on J&P cycles and i keep seeing them say ones that have 9/16", and 11/16", and ones that have 15mm bore. what exactly am i suppose to do with these numbers? bars are 7/8" so i know it doesn't have to do with that, but what am i looking for?

They are talking piston bore.

could use a little more help, not sure what that means on what i need to look for.

The reservoir comes off of the master cylinder and can be replaced, if that's all you want to do, a cup from a CB900 or similar is the same part, at least that'll give you a broader search. You can even get one new. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-45511-MA ... SwmMNZ5NZG You'll need an O ring for it though, part # 45516-166-006, also available new.

The 9 & 11/16th bore stuff is for Harley Davidson, depending on whether it operates 1 or 2 rotors, the same applies to Honda but in metric, I'm pretty sure 12mm is for 1983 linked brake models and 14mm is for all the others where the front brake lever operates both front rotors.

appreciate it, but damn.....costs more for just the plastic then new master cylinder i bought that is meant for the GL1100

Okay but think about it, the old one lasted 37 years and you're only changing it out because it's become old and unsightly.

So if you want guaranteed quality? Not to mention reliability!...... Oops, I mentioned reliability.

more then that....its flaking off. you look at it and it likes to throw a few grains of plastic off of it

I hate brakes ..my background come from shoe brakes t rest were ideally peddle metal rod to brake lever. Never a problem ever unless wreck
.front had cable to brake lever ..some what more problem than rear ..hydro brakes my god what a pain in the butt ..progress I just love it at times

My 78 was always garage and pampered. Was and still is a very clean Motorcycle. There was nothing wrong with my front master cylinder. I just did not like that uuugly round reservoir jutting off the bar. I installed one of those Chinese 14mm units some years ago and have had zero problems with it.

I will say that during a failed attempt at converting to hydraulic clutch, a matching left reservoir had leakage issues. It did come with a rebuild kit and I will address it once I revisit that project...someday.
