Thanks for the info, that's great news! I guess I need to revisit my engine knock, I was just about to separate it into usable spares!

I sure hope that turns out well for you, Kerry. But, sometimes a knock is a knock. Sort of like admitting you're an alcoholic. Nobody ever really wants to do that...
 
Yes DesertR, it seems a real knock won't go away easily. I put the engine up on the table to carefully check the timing marks and the exhaust gaskets. Both appeared correct. Maybe I'll re-visit this issue later, but for now this motor appears toasted.
