Just a heads up, the center stand cross over piece tends to rust out also.
There are ways to fix it, weld in a pipe as replacement is one way.

Ok Dan appreciate the heads up. I'm going to inspect ever Sq inch of that frame. I will be riding my 5 year old aroubd the yard and neighborhood on it so not only for my own well being but more importantly my son's. Good lookin out!. So do you guys think I can use a sub frame rail from any gl1000 year? Or should I be safe and stick to 78-79?

Any 1000 removable frame section should fit. I've read 1100 section can be fitted with some modification so you should be in good shape.

It's just great to have Hospitality and wisdom. and nice to have people who share the same passion... I have a full aftermarket ferring, trunk and softail seat I am going to fabricate onto this bike. They were once on my CB 750. I plan to paint them all to match and add leather saddles and 1100 front fender to match as well. I will post pics this weekend of ferring and seat once it's on the bike. I should have the sub frame rail by the 8th.

When I bought the bike I rode it home about 20 mile trip. I should have looked it over better. Mind you I don't have a pic but I took the butt of the screwdriver and easily pushed a hole the size of a quarter thru it after I took the pics, effortless.
