Some of you might recall that I am elbows deep into a Kawasaki project. So why, you ask, would I acquire three, yes 3, complete Honda basket cases? Well, mainly because they were dang near free. Friend of a friend passed away after a lengthy illness recently and had these motorcycles on his Phoenix back porch for who knows how many years. His son asked my friend if he could get rid of them. I guess I'm the lucky recipient...

They go into the shed - for a rainy day - and you know how many of those we have here in Phoenix.

Anyway, 78 CB750F sohc. This is a really what I was after, but it was all or nothing. It is mostly complete, but a real mess. I don't even know what's under all the filth yet, but I don't expect too much. The tank is somewhere in the garage needs to be located. Fingers crossed on that... The pipe dream is that it could be a restoration candidate, but more likely a custom.

There's also a 76 750K in about a hundred pieces. This is just a parts Locker for the 78 I think .

Then there's the CB400T Type I. It appears to be all there, but being outside on a back porch even in Arizona has taken its toll. Not worth nothing, but it's not worth much either.

I haven't seen them yet, as the titles are being transferred to the wife so they can legally be sold. My friend has seen them and seems to think that there might be some potential. Yes, all three are titled. Looks like the transfer will be finalized in a couple of weeks.

So, I either have a couple of viable project candidates in the pipeline, or a whole bunch of junk. I think at the very least, I have a bunch of parts that I can sell off. Either way, looks like more fun ahead in the not-too-distant future.

(No pic of the 76 pile)

Had a 400T in the mid 80s. Coldest ride I ever did was one morning to work @ 9*F., no windscreen. I remember it had little torsion bars instead of valve springs. If you was closer... :headscratch:

I rescued a '79 CB750F last winter that had been left uncovered outdoors since '99. Didn't worry about appearance and built it as a "rat bike". Sold it in the spring for what I had invested. New owner sent a picture last mont and he's pleased as can be. He just added a "Trust the Rust" decal on each side. I had made it reliable and safe. New front end from a '78 GL1000, rebuilt brakes, some new cam caps and valve cover bolts, cleaned up electrics, new tires. And this was after setting in the rain forests of East Tennessee! Those should all rescue or even restore fine barring PO damage and parts locating.

I have a CM400E in the garage I occasionally ride.

Somewhere around 40F is when I stop riding it. It gets cold without a windshield.

sounds like you had an early / mid 70's DOHC cb 450, the 400t was the start of the three valve 400 /450's

It was along time, and many brain cells, ago. :headscratch:

Yeppers - CB450/500s in the early 70s were DOHC twins. At least some had 2 valves per cylinder.

CB/CM400s and the CM450s were late 70s/early 80s SOHC twins with 3 valves per cylinder.

I went and eyeballed the stuff today. Folks, this is the deal of the century for someone willing to put in a little elbow grease. Me I guess... The tank for the F is gorgeous. It has been put up and hasn't been outside. I was shocked.

The 400 is all there but has been dropped. Left side tank has quite a dent and the shift lever is wasted. Other than that, it is all there except for a couple turn signal lenses. It should clean up pretty well. Motor turns over freely with decent compression.

F motor turns over freely, but has leaked more oil than the Exxon Valdez. 29000 miles. It needs some serious love. I believe I will take it down to the frame and spend some time on it - at some point in the future.

The K is in a million pieces - including the engine with cases, pistons, oil pumps and God knows what scattered all around the garage. It'll be a miracle if I get a complete engine ... meaning finding all the parts. The frame is nicer than the Super Sport. Fenders are nice. Tank looks decent but is in primer. Harness is still missing in action, but the garage is a mess and we will be digging for stuff when I go to pick them up.

All in all, I made out like a bandit. The Super Sport tank alone is worth what I am paying for the lot.

> I'm the lucky recipient...

I would have said so several years ago but not sure now. LOL

I remember you have a huge garage. That's definately a plus. I have no space left in my merger 2-car garage.
Plus registration fees are getting expensive here in CA. Now it's around $120 per bike. (sigh)

Got really nostalgic with that "kettle tank" CB400T. (Didn't they come with comster wheels? Oh that was a Hawk II.)

I wasn't looking, these things found me. Honest. Truth told, I kinda like having a few in the pipeline.

And yes, that's a CB400T Type I. Drum brakes, spokes...not sure about other differences. It was the base model.

I paid $200 for the pile. Did I get ripped off?

That's a good get with all the titles!
Rare in today's online commerce like eBay.
Probably I will do the same even though I don't have any place to store them.. LOL

Well, titles have been converted. I’ll go pick up the bounty on Saturday morning.

Wish me luck. I truly think I’m going to need it.
:salute:
