I went to napa and got a thermostat 101.
Everything I have read said it would fit the 1100.
I can not get it to fit in the cap where it belongs. I found an extra cap and it would not fit it either.
I have about 1/4 inch gap. No way would antifreeze stay in the engine.
What did I do wrong?

I attempted to find a parts listing to confirm or deny that is the correct t stat. Too stupid tired now to find it. I do know these are odd sized as is the one for my old Ranger. Standard sized t stat just won't fit.

NAPA T101 IS the correct one...I just put one in my '81. Perhaps you got one that had been put in the wrong box....happens all the time. Take it back and compare to another T101.

Napa did measure the 101. It was in the correct box.
I guess I will run with no thermostat in this bike.
Let her rip! Summer is about here anyhow..I never looked at mine but sure you had it in the right direction? maybe they changed manufacturers and new ones are a little different now..but what do I know.

By "cap", do you mean the water outlet housing? Is it possible that the housing has been changed in the past?
Don't s'pose you have any pics of this mis-match, do ya? Ya got me curious now. I know I went to NAPA, and got a T 101 stat, and it fit my '81 just perfect. I have two old t-stats I can measure, as well as both the outlet housing, and the t-stat housing cover/hose connection, if it would help any.

water outlet housing is where I am at. Where the rad hose fits the bottom of the rad. I had an extra outer fitting and it matched the same as what is on the bike. Did not matter which way I put the thermostat there was a 1/4 inch gap to close up the engine.

Let me play a little more and I will shoot some pics this weekend.

Like Joe said, I think we have discovered the problem.

The lower radiator hose connects to the waterpump housing.

It's the upper radiator hose that connects to the thermostat housing.

When you remove the old thermostat take notice of the orientation of the small relief hole and reinstall the new one the same way it makes a difference.

Yup...I tink we have a consensus!

Disregard the "water pump outlet" label....I meant to put INLET....

Well well well no wonder it would not fit.
an old dog learned a new trick. Here I thought I knew this bike inside and out.

I was trying to put it in the outlet hose.

Thanks for the info.
