Always change the starter with bike on the side stand.That way the starter shaft will line up with the gear hanging on the chain.

Did you have it on the center stand when you started tinkering with it?

Joe he said when he put that fuel tank on and removed the fuel pump (gravity feed now) he didn't have to do anything to the carbs. It ran like brand new.

I use the different brands of the chemical hot hands packages. They fit in your gloves and boots and stay hot for 8 to 10 hours. I've ridden 400 miles in 40 degree or less weather and felt fine.

Is it possible that the starter clutch mechanism is sticking. There was an older post about using Seafoam in the oil and that it help clean the gunk out of the little balls, pins and springs that need to move through centrifugal force to engage the starter. +1

You said that the starter looked brand new. I had bought a new one off Ebay that didn't work. Sent it back for an exchange. The new one didn't work either. Same symptoms as you have on both new ones. Pulled the new one and took the gear head off. It had no gears in it, just the armature shaft...

Possibly 2 sets. I see what looks like to wavy ends. The wavy ends are for the left cover. Looks like plenty of rubber in there to cover both sides ?

On the Aspencades they get the 2 tone paint job by placing a filter over the base color. I believe that the striping was part of the filter. They then sprayed multiple coats of clear over all of it. I toured the factory in Marysville,Ohio and saw them built back in 83.

Make sure that you pull the starter with the bike on the side stand. Makes it much easier to get the gear in the starter chain sprocket.
