I wouldn't buy anything larger than 32 mm.

Is that the measurement at the bottom of the carb into the plenum?

It's the measurement of the choke within the barrel. Look closely for any markings on the carb for clues.

It may seem like I'm bouncing around a bit but I'm still gathering info. If I go the solex route, am I better off buying a rebuildable used German or Mexican unit versus a new one that is most likely Chinese? Or does it even make a difference?

A real Solex carb you will probably not have a problem with them and they can be rebuilt over and over again as long as the body isn't broken. But there are several after market makers that make a "solex" look alike and, well, the quality isn't the same. I have been monkeying around with some idle issues on mine for the last several weeks and I am pretty sure that my problems stem from the fact that I have one of these less the spec generic types.

What I have found with this set-up, idle was/is the hardest thing to get correct. Anything after idle, the carb is adjusted perfectly and the motor just pulls like a train. I took the easy way out and bought a used setup with a pre-manufactured manifold. I will probably be buying another carb sometime in the future because I intend to put this on my 87 when I have the 84 back on the road again.

I am a recent eBay winner of a manifold that looks exactly like this. I'm very excited for it to show up. Now I need to hunt down a good solex for it. I'll start the hunt on eBay this evening for a good unit.

Question about throttle cables. I assume you remove the push cable altogether? Also, does the stock pull cable connect to the carb or does it require some modding by nipping off the ball end? I have brand new cables and would hate to have to modify them but I'll do whatever is necessary.

Depends on the way you choose to connect really. There are several possible ways to hook up the throttle cables. Some have adapted stock wheel linkage for both cable others have been a bit more creative.

Gee I have to look now how I did the cable on my solex. Been so long.

If you get time, would you let me know how your's is set up? The manifold doesn't arrive until Thursday which also is the day we are leaving for a week's vacation. It will be mid July before I get to this. I'll have the carb bought sometime and sitting here waiting for me also.

I'm debating purchasing an older carb and a rebuild kit or a new one.

The push cable was removed, and the pull cable the nib was removed. When I bought my setup, the carb came with a cable adapter that attaches to the end of the cable and then slides into the carb receiver which is locked into the carb sleeve with a set screw, like this.

Brian, we must have the same manifold. This one is coming with the adapter for the cable. You said earlier that I should avoid the Chinese variant of the carb. Are you having any issues?

Not really any issues other than chasing an idle that keeps changing. I've read similar things on some of the VW forums. Everyone claimed the problems were due to the cheap Chinese carbs.

When I move my single carb setup over to my 87, I am going to be getting a new to me Solex carb. I am using this one as a learning tool.

Where does one buy a new real solex?

My Solex is a clone of an old style Jeep and connects to the carb with a built in clamp and set screw dealio. I think it's throttle hookup to the more common Solex being referenced by others is much different and may not help.

I doubt that you could, but even a 30 year old original Solex, that is rebuilt, would be better than some of the knock-off garbage that you can buy new on eBay today.

Thanks brian, appears some searching is in order

There's a guy near where I work that has a bug, bus, and a buggy in his driveway. I called him this morning and asked about spare parts. He has a solex (I presume, older, original, etc) in a box of parts that needs rebuilt but he'd sell it to me for $10. Is there any identifying info on these carbs that says where manufactured? Or, does it literally say "Made in Germany" or "Made in Mexico"?

Original should say made in germany.

That's what I'll be looking for. I'll get my hands on it and look for where it originated from and hunt for a rebuild kit.

I have no clue what's there when we meet. He said that t was in a box of parts he inherited from his father along with his 64 beetle.
