I know Hooch has a 1200cc engine stuffed into a GL1000 cycle and gearing is lower (more power, less top speed)
Can a 1200 rear end be installed on a GL1000 cycle to attempt mileage increases with the C5 ignition?

I have no idea what needs to be done for swapping rear diffs. I am installing a sidecar but might try this experiment on my other GL1000.

JoeDrum or anyone else...help me!!

the 1000 oldwing motor is really different from all the others .........it is a very close ratio transmission ....its secondary reduction from motor to transmission is the tallest ....

the result of all this is a very tall first gear ...and a very low fifth gear....

the first mod I ever did was putting a 1100 final in a 79 1000 bike ...this gave me a fifth gear about the same as a 83 1100 with overdrive..it also gave me a really tall first gear ...

there was no doubt that I like it ....as it was much better to tour with ....

overall it was fine but ...its not going to be a trailer puller .....first gear is about maxed out ...it becomes a rather one person bike ...two up okay but add a hill start and it becomes a real clutch management deal to get going ....the 1200 final would be a little more load on first gear ....

I think if someone was building a bobber style bike ...this would be great setup ...I always like the long lasting first gear ...

the 1100 final into a 1000 ...was a nightmare of a mod ....mostly due to driveshaft length ...and Honda use of a one time only crimped together u joint ....that just suck ...there is no reason to build such a crappy drive system ever ...just a complete we don't care engineering deal...

end result was there was no change in mpg ....but this was Honda ignition so ...id say it was mostly due to that ....would I ever do it again ....no!!!!!! this was a lot of work for very little gain

on the 1200 final I have no clue ...may be easier than 1100 final mod ...

today ill look at Slabghost dresser and see what I think as doable and how hard .....

im sure it would take full swingarm ...brakes...and probably shocks to to work .....

Much of the gain from the 1200 rear end would be lost on the 1000 as the 1200 has a 15" rear tire. With enough money, anything can be done. What folks in the 70's and early 80's were doing to improve mileage was buying an 18" Lester for the back. My 1200 into a 1000 has it. On a 1000 it was a lot of grunt to get going, but cruised a bit lower. I was never able to find a 140 or 150/ 90 rear tire for it. I currently have a 140/80/18 on the back which almost the same as a 130/90/18 for circumference. Lester 18" rear are rare, but show up occasionally.

yes id be much more in favor of modifying wheel ..as easier to do ... but costly ...Honda really missed first and fifth gear big time ....they finally got a good spread in gearing on the 1200 ....witch is one of the reasons I like it over the 1000s....

Wow, so much information to figure out. I knew you'd have the answers (not that I like what I am facing).

On my '77 I could at least have another rear rim laced up to the hub. My '78 is stuck with mag rims which maybe the Lester was?

Gary from PowerArc and I discussed needing a taller final drive ratio to really see mileage increases with the C5. It would have the added power to pull it, but making that change is no small task.

If you relace, you could also go with a wider rim. The Lester was 3" wide allowing a 140 or 150 on the back. I hope to find a 150/90 street tire for mine the next time. Using an 18" also puts the tire in the wider part of the swing arm on the 1000's.

I'll try finding a tire first. I need knobbies. My Tenere has a 150x17 I think, and I run Kenda Big Block DOT dirt tires.
They wear out fast but you cant get stuck easily.

hmmmm seems you can get a 4.25 wide rim in 18" for spokes in forty hole pre drilled wonder how many spokes wing wheels have ..... at rather a good price 165$ ....I will have to look into this some with hooch ...it would be nice to get a little taller gearing for hooch ...ill have to check tire sizes and see what available ....

1500 pumpkin/wheel might be doable

That looks like a project for a retired guy. I don't think I'd ever get finished. Too bad we cant swap ring gears like a car, right?
