Well, for the first time in my life, other than for mounting/balancing tires, I had to pay to have my car worked on. My back just won't let me bend over a fender anymore. Having a water pump and timing cover replaced on the old Taurus, which I could've done for about $150, but paying about $850. Crap!!!

I hear ya. The wife makes me use a simple math formula to figure this out.
Can I do it? Y or N
How long will it take to do it/how much will it cost?
How long will it take me to do it> Multiply by my worth @ $25-40 /hr
How will I feel when it is done?

Using this simple logic works. If you have the money you are able to easily rationalize the expenditure or justify the pain you go through to save those dollars for your for parts for the wing.

I like your formula. Mine is more like 1 hour bending = 1- 2 days of serious back pain. Shop charges will have to get quite a bit higher to make it worth that pain. Oh, to be 20 again!!

Getting old sucks. On that I agree. However the alternative is to die young. I really see no advantage there. At least I was around to help my father when he got old enough he didn't want to wrench or couldn't alone. I don't see that happening much anymore.

For me, it is laying on my back and looking up over my head... I get dizzy and disoriented. Not sure if it is my MS causing that or something else, but because of that, I just don't work under the car anymore. It is also the reason I bought a bike lift and I am looking at making a table so I can work on the the bike when it is a little higher. The mechanic can change the oil in my cars, but they aren't touchng my bikes!

Oh LAWD.....do I know that feelin....
My 'Burban has been sitting for almost 10 years now because I can't convince myself to crawl under the hood and pull the ds head. Even taking the wheels/tires off doesn't get it low enough. I keep tellin meself every fall that I'm gunna get it done, but....I have learned that my allergies just really won't allow it......I'm allergic to PAIN.....

I've thought aboot having a friend do the heavy lifting/bending for me, but for some reason, that just don't seem right. But.....I'll get it done this fall.....

:smilie_happy:

sheesh a fight harder now than ever in life to be free to the best of my ability .....when freedom is being taken away from you like it has been for me ...in such a way it all internal and outside forces are not involved ... to me getting older wasnt going to happen unless i fought for it ... i am still fighting hard ever day ... it has consumed me totally and is 100% of my life ....the one thing i know without running afoul of free speech turned offensive to statis quo ....you cant buy your health at all .....and if you dont think its a fight your in for big time bruising either bought or self inflicked

Well I just turned 50 and I now get 1/2 priced or 1/2 points buffets at our favorite casino on Wednesdays couple that with a 1/2 off coupon(we get 4 monthly) and it's free! :yahoo: Oh yeah and listening to our daughter lament motherhood while apologizing what she put us through in the same breath! :hihihi:

~O~

Gees listen to you guys! Buncha wringled up tired old farts is what you sound like.

Old is only how you let it.
Fight for your youth.

I know......pain is undeniable, I've had back and tail bone pain all my adult life but you have to push through it and complaining about it don't help.

Sorry to hear that Steve, money is a precious thing, some of you fella`s aught to think about an inversion table, Been using one for 15 years and couldn't get on without one.
Takes several times before you get relief, at first your back tenses up and wont relax but after a few times when it does it can relocate some vertebra and make you feel better and with regular use it will stick with ya.
I bought mine at a thrift store for 30 bucks but seen them on CL 40-80.
By the way my mom has a Taurus and as I recall the belt looked buried, maybe engine lift necessary.

I hear all you old fogeys... oh wait I resemble that remark too.. I don't bend or flex or reach like stretch armstrong anymore.... I snap, crackle and pop more than rice krispies.. getting down ain't hard, and sometimes I fall and like it there.. getting back on feet takes some gymnastics .. but i still keep on trucking and riding.. that's good therapy!!!

I had the same thing happen to me about 6 months ago I slid out from under the car and got up then went back down to my hands and knees stayed there for about 15 minutes before I could make it into the house. But still had to finish the car so a few days later I found out if I slide out from under the car roll over on my stomach for a minute then I can get up ok with no dizziness just can't sit up after laying on my back
Even getting out of bed I can't sit up first, I have to roll out to my knees then stand up.
I still have to work on my own cars just got done changing the head gasket on my truck took two months (told the wife 20 years ago it would have been a weekend job) can't reach nothing from the ground and would get tired of climbing in and out of where the radiator mounted to reach stuff.

Yeah, it is great therapy.

I didn't mean to start a whiney old farts thread, I'd just rather get the '83 registered and maybe pick up a nice audio system for the car than pay someone to do what I used to do all the time. Oh well, I'm still breathing and have all my original equipment, so I shouldn't complain.

Hey! Mine isn't an age thing. It's a neurological thing... That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!!

No problem with just laying down, it's only if I am laying down and looking up towards the top of my head at the same time. I get so dizzy I feel nauseous, so I just don't do it anymore. It pisses the wife off when she has to pay for an oil change, but oh well.
