On the Ford Forum someone posted this promotional video for the RTVs

I ended up replacing the park/hand brake shoe inside the left hand rear disc as when I was running through the gears in the auto while still on the hoist, I was reaching through the window and using it to slow the spinning rear wheels and realised it was useless. I then took it for a strap to see how all my repairs had progressed and wanted to see if the diff lock worked as hoped. The XR instrument cluster does not have a diff lock light/indicator in it so I was hoping that a traction control, ABS light etc may work instead to show the diff lock engaged. No such luck but after pressing the switch it did lock the rear diff which I confirmed by taking a quick run up the hill in our street to the cul-de-sac and attempting a u turn. As these diffs are quite rare now they are almost worth more second hand than I paid for the Utes, I did a gentle six point U turn. Back on the DD I put the boot in and got the big twin rooster tails and sideways step out from a fully locked diff :yahoo:
I still need to replace some front end components to get rid of some unwanted knocking so it is back up on the hoist for the RTV. Getting close though to having it all sorted. :good:

More progress today with new hub bearing assembly, upper and lower ball joints installed.
Stub assembly removed to allow removal of inner bearing race that froze on stub, new ball joints and sway bar link visible.
Cut inner bearing with 1mm cutting wheel in cordless 18v grinder
Weakend cut bearing race beat with ball peen hammer to crack it loose and then pryed with chisel to finally get it free
Slight Mark with the grinder and plenty of rust on the stub showing why inner race was left behind when pulling hub assembly. You can also see what happens to cheap Chinese ball peen hammer when you beat a hardened ball race with it. This was the LH side and the RH has done the same :(
Cleaned up stub showing slight mark still and ready for reassembly

great work tony ...good hands there
:thanks: Joe
It's about 6am Sunday morning so I hope I can duplicate the job on the rh stub assembly now to finish up the job before heading out about 9.30 am

I just found this ad for the RTV from back in the day (2003-2008)

RTV passed its roadworthy today after the addition of a new sway bar chassis mount bracket and a dual horn. I need to change the rear spring hanger bushes as they are cracking and swap the incorrect straight sway bar links for the bent RTV ones that are correct tomorrow with a bit of luck. It is then just a matter of transferring the canopy and my tools out of the XLS so that I can then finally sell the XLS and afford to register the RTV. :yahoo:

Great to move past a big job, :good: you enjoy the work long after the P I T A time, & money spent on it is almost forgotten. :salute:

A lot of hard work is paying off! Nicely done, Tony!

Can't wait to drive it on a regular basis as I really have enjoyed the couple of short runs that I have taken in it. Played up in the DD on Friday with the diff locked and flat on the go peddle which sent 2 rooster tails and stepped out sideways :hihihi:
On Sunday I took a quick 50 kph up the DD which felt great and should be even better with a loaded tray :clapping:

I have been chasing a receiver hitch towbar so that I can swap tounges easily with the Forester as we have a specialised off road hitch for the trailer and it also increases towing capacity from 1600kgs to 2300kgs. I found one in Evans Head NSW and the guy also had a full set of RTV Mudflaps and a poly Smart Bar for sale. 400 Ks road trip in the XLS today to pick up the parts in a place that we had driven past many times but never visited (14 Ks off the main Sydney - Brisbane highway).

It was a bit windy but still pretty spectacular
