I finally got Gold Wing #2 home, and still sleeping in the house! It is a 79 GL1000. The PO has done some interesting wiring and painting... I have replaced the front tire and ordered the parts for the front brakes, new pads and caliper kits. Going to paint the tank side that was painted flat yellow back to black. Still restoring my 83, slowly. Now I have a Wing to ride to work, at the Kaw/Yam/Victory dealership....

Congrats! What's their opionion of the GL at your work?

My boss thinks I should get an older voyager, I told him : It's a Wing thing, you wouldn't understand", he walked away shaking his head. :smilie_happy:

Mine too.. she does tolerate.. at least as long as she can ride..... she loves to sight see so paying attention to the road ahead is not her cup of tea... "just drive me like miss daisy"..

here are a couple of pics just before the first ride. I rode 12 miles, and am very happy! No bad things happened, must have been the Gremlin Bell hard at work. I had to rewire the horns, and I put led bulbs in the tail light. Have to order the rest of the led's for dash and turn signals. A Gold Wing has been my dream since High School in '85, other than a chinese scooter for 4 months, this is the first true motorcycle I've ridden since '91. Feels so good th get back into the wind.... :yahoo:

I was having very bad idling issues with my Chinese solex copy carb. I installed the Stovebolt carb today and it runs like a dream! I also discovered the PO put in a dyna style ignition with Accel coils. The stator wires are all soldered. I have upgraded all the bulbs with LED's and an electronic flasher. Rebuilt both front calipers and put in new pads. Waiting for the front master rebuild kit to get here tomorrow, so no ride yet. Seems like the PO did a few upgrades that worked out well, just the carb was not a good choice. Hopefully the master rebuild kit gets here tomorrow, then RIDE!!!

wow ...this is something ...the 1 barrel fails and the 2 barrel works .....the dft has a nice sized primary barrel ... the 79 has a very mild cam with the shortest of open time during intake stroke ....on this year bike and 78 yr bike the stovebolt carb seems to do its best out of the box ....1000 pistons are 3mm smaller than 1100s and 3.5mm smaller than 1200....keep good watch on it and check plug color soon ...congrats

Just curious...what kind of shifter do you have with your floorboards?...

Nice bike, you'll grow quickly to love it...*nods head*

It's a heel toe shifter, here are a couple of pictures. It is real sloppy like it needs bushings or something, I will look at it this weekend.

Today I decided to scrap the '83.I am using the pipes, bags and trunk for the '79. Here are some pics of the test fitting. The back rises up quite a bit, but I think it looks ok. It is on the center stand. I have been very happy with this bike since I put the stovebolt carb on.

Looking good. I'd keep the 83 for parts.

I plan on using what I can and selling the rest. Unfortunately none of the new suspension will work for the '79. Oh well, at least I have the experience of re-building forks!

I think the 83 swingarm and rear can be fitted and the entire front fork assembly can be fitted from the 83 with changing the steering head bearings. A lot can be swapped out with a little effort.
