Is there some way on god's green earth of making these tighten without running a self tapper through, tried some rubber pieces. Weld it I guess

A friend of mine had an older 1800 with the Wingleader foot pegs and had the same issue. He took a quality stainless hose clamp, cut the adjustment screw off the clamp, and added it under the foot peg clamp to take up the slop that caused it to drop whenever he put his feet on them. Worked for him and he was 6'2". He was originally going to use a piece of soft copper, but was unsure if he would run into a dissimilar metal corrosion issue.
 
I get thin sheets of neoprene rubber at my hardware store. Cut to size I wrap it around the frame to cushion and take up space. Compressing the clamp should make it immobile
