You have to check the hydraulic valve adjuster according to the manual. Not the shims under each cap! If the engine is running, the valves are not bend.

That bike on the photo is a GL 1200 STD ‚84. The cowl is from a GL 1100. Compare the chrome covers of the carburettor and the endtips of the exhaust pipes.

Why should it idle below 900? The idle is 1000 +/- 100 rpm. If that is too fast, turn of the ignition.
