New Project - Haven't been on in a while.

Hi Folks, I haven't been on the site in a while as I've been working on other bikes. I just picked up a new GL project a few weeks ago which brought me back here looking for parts and info. It's a very neglected 83 GL1100. It has a lot of options and some stuff is in OK shape, though the...

It's official. She has a new home!

The '77 was loaded up and taken to her new home in Maine yesterday. It's a very sad day when I'm down to one bike!

    Oh look! Progressive springs!

I'm replacing my fork seals in my '81 after blowing the right one on the way to Laconia this week, and I discovered I have progressive fork springs. Anyone know the fork oil recommendation with these in place, and PSI while you're at it? Thanks!

Test rode the'81 the other day.

It started off fine with a trip to the gas station. On the way home the sky opened up and it began to pour, which soon caused a misfire and eventually a break down - a half mile from home! I tried to get it started to no avail. I hiked up the road to my home where my trailer was already...

    She's done! (mostly)

She's ready for some road testing - my favorite part!! This bike may not win any shows, but it's come a long way from when it first came home. 10+ years of sitting can do some major damage to a bike, but she runs great now and is fully functional. I just need to get it registered and probably...

    Almost done!!

She'll be on the road soon! I just have to finish this water pump job and add some horns. Then I get to put some miles on it!

Cooling system mystery from the PO.

So I'm a bit under the weather today (caught the wife and kids's cold) so I decided to stay home. Of course I got sucked in.... I drained and flushed the coolant today and noticed a bronze-ish glitter to the coolant. Lots of it. Hmm. I removed and drained the reservoir and noticed there was...

81 Interstate seat and "tank" attach

Hi Folks. This project bike must be missing some parts. How do the seat and fake "tank" attach to the bike? Thanks!

    She got a bath today

It's a rare thing when I actually wash this Wing and clean it up. The first group ride of the season is coming up and she has to look good. A quick wash and a spit shine and here is what she looks like: Pretty good for a 34 year old daily driver.

    IT'S ALIVE!!!

The story of the past couple days.... So I got my dirty cheapy carb kits installed (will upgrade to better parts later), dealt with plugged jets and passages, and really battled some pretty gunky carbs. All in all it's not too bad a job considering where I started. Today I reassembled the bank...

    Boiling carbs

So, I've never tried boiling carburetors to clean them. Anyone here done it before? Will the hot water damage the throttle shaft seals or black plastic choke cams? I opened up these carbs and man are they messy. It's a nasty combo of varnish and dirt. Rebuild kit is on it's way.

    Rode the bike today!

Finally! '77 is out of the barn and on the road!

Spark plug fragment INSIDE the cylinder.. OOPS!

So, after drilling and tapping the three broken plugs in my 1100, the two right side cylinders have large chunks inside too large to remove with a magnet out the plug hole. I'm considering trying to remove them out the intake valve possibly. Anyone have any good tricks or tips? Thanks a bunch!

    1100 Brake Alternatives.

Anyone running something other than the stock '81 front master cylinder? Also, do the two piston calipers bolt right up in place of the single if I wanted to change them out? Thanks folks.
