    Trac forks

Use your 82 calipers. The 83 has one caliper with 25mmpistons and one with 32mm because of the linked brakes. If you use the 83 speedo snail-drive, you'll need the 83 cable. The axle is the same. My 82 has 83 forks, wheel and speedo drive. Kept the 82 calipers, bolt right up! There was no...

    gl1100 fork movement

Each side has 4 preload positions. Set them at 1, ride it and test the amount of dive from a controlled stop. Reset them to 4, test again replicating the same controlled stop. I grafted 83 TRAC onto my 82. Easy mod, kept the 82 calipers (unlinked). Setting #4 gives significantly less dive...

    New Guy from Eastern NC

I filled my nipples with RTV when I re-routed the crankcase vent to the puke cup line. I had a layer of foam crud in the very bottom (segmented area) of my airbox.

    81 and 82 Speedometer Interchangeble?

I noticed since tightening my steering head that my right turn cancel requires more than just going straight. I have to throw a little left wiggle past center into it to get a cancel. Might clean up the angle sensor on my next maintenance break.

    81 and 82 Speedometer Interchangeble?

I believe so. You have to go to an 83 schematic to see the turn cancel wiring, even though it was present and functioning on my 82 Standard. I had a speedo drive gear strip and while speedo was inoperative, I had no canceling function. Funny how you get spoiled.

    81 and 82 Speedometer Interchangeble?

My 82 has the speed sensor built into it. That makes the turn signals self cancel. If yours has the angle sensor on the steering head (rubber grommet on top of the tree nut, under the handlebars will tell you), then you may have self-canceling too. 81 did not, according to the wiring diagrams.

    lexan for windshield

Yes, works good. The lowers from the headlamp bolt bracket to the turn signal jiggle some. Makes light dance on wet nights. My earlier version had more braces it didn't need. Here:

    lexan for windshield

I made two different ones for my naked 82. This is the latest, Lexan is very easy to work with and make bend, even without heat.

Cleaning up 26 years of filth

I used a pressure washer and Simple Green / Purple Power surfactant/degreaser. I wet the whole bike with water, sprayed degreaser, let that sit while I used a couple different brushes; the spokes brush was very handy. Kept it wet with a misting of water every now and then. Once I had what I...

    gas gage?

My sender was stiff and rusty and read open with an ohm meter (any position). I stroked it full sweep about 100 times while pushing additional preload on the shaft to make the wiper clean the windings. Still read intermittently open, so I split a light washer and added it to the shaft, which...

    82 Naked Resto

I'm not too awfully worried about it yet, now that I know how much residual oil gets trapped. Thank you all for that. I was planning on an oil change anyway, since the kerosene had to dilute it somewhat. Today's bad news was twofold. The petcock seals are leaking.....so much for the pretty...
