    1986 Interstate ignition

Anyone have a good source for the pulse generators besides eBay?

    1986 Interstate ignition

Thanks. I’m torn about doing any more to this bike. The son has a newer Harley now so he will sell or scrap this one out. The pulse generators are going for about $90 and the tires are shot. Makes me wonder if he would be better off just scrapping it out. I don’t have any voltage at that coil...

    1986 Interstate ignition

Ok, I do have a bad pulse generator. Now I have another question. This is a 86 so the pulse generators are under the timing belt cover. Can I get at them without removing the engine? It sure doesn’t look like it at first glance.

    1986 Interstate ignition

Well, I did swap the wires and it actually started! Of course only running on two cylinders! I have no voltage on that coil with the ignition switch and the kill switch on. Does that confirm a bad ignition module? The connectors to the ignition modules and the coils all look good...

    1986 Interstate ignition

Hey, good idea! Thanks, I’ll try that. I did notice that my primary voltage on that one is under 10 volts so it could be a bad connection.

    1986 Interstate ignition

I am down to the ignition module or one of the pulse modulators. I have spark on the rear cylinders only. I’ll need to check on how to test the spark modulators. By the way, are the primary wires of the coils polarity sensitive? If the wires were reversed, would that coil work? Thanks again for...

Thanks everyone. I’ll check all thos recommendations. The plug wires are quite old and likely the plugs as well.

    1986 Interstate ignition

Still trying to get sons 1200 started again. Had multiple wiring issues and thought I had them all worked out. Apparently Not! Replaced the regulator and plug, replaced the starter diode and burned wires. Checked most of the wiring harness out. I have a clamp on timing light that I am using to...

    1986 Fuel pump relay plug

This isn’t a standard coil relay. This is a solid circuit relay. Not sure if I can find a 82 Magna relay but I guess that might be a possibility.

    1986 Fuel pump relay plug

Here is a scratcher for you guys. I decided to bite the bullet and replace the fuel pump relay with the correct unit trying to keep it original. I guess I should have been a little doubtful as the harness had been taped up at some time in the past. It turns out that someone replaced the...

    Diode replacement

    Thanks!

    Diode replacement

I’ve got a blown diode in the starting circuit of the 86. This is the one shown in the starting circuit labeled Silicon Rectifier. Anyone know what the part number is or a suitable replacement? Also, I suppose I should check what could cause this and what else I should be checking. Wires in...

    1986 fuel pump relay

Well, I might have finally stumbled on my problem but I need help identifying this device. Notice the melted wires! I think it’s the silicon rectifier and if it is, how do I test it? I think a previous owner had an issue but failed to properly fix it. Entire harness has been taped. Thanks. Any...

    1986 fuel pump relay

Fuel pump relay issues! I double checked the fuel pump. It does run and I do get spark. I also checked the voltage at the pins so pretty sure I have a bad relay. I have seen comments that this relay is pulsed and others that say it is just energized when the switch is in the Run position. The...

    Cruisin' on the Wing

I am so jealous! It's been awhile since I've taken a long trip on the bike. Had back surgery last November so I'm happy to just commuting this summer and fall.
